How to Install a ZTE MTP Driver in Windows
Get a ZTE phone recognized for file transfer in Windows: set USB mode, install or reassign the MTP driver in Device Manager, verify the connection and fix common errors.
MTP (Media Transfer Protocol) is how Windows exchanges photos, videos, recordings and other files with an Android phone over USB. When a ZTE phone only charges, appears as an unknown device or shows a driver error, the cause is usually the USB mode on the phone, the cable, or the Windows driver assigned to the device. This guide explains how to get the correct MTP driver working and how to undo each change if needed.
Before you start
Everything here runs locally on your PC and phone. No online service or account is needed unless Windows has to download a driver through Windows Update, or you choose to install a USB driver package that ZTE provides for your specific model. Before changing any drivers, check the following:
- A USB cable that supports data. Some cables only charge, and a phone connected with one will never appear as an MTP device.
- A working USB port, preferably directly on the computer rather than through an unpowered hub.
- The phone unlocked with its screen on. Many Android phones block file access while locked.
- Your Windows edition. N and KN editions ship without media components that MTP relies on and need the Media Feature Pack installed first.
- Administrator rights on the PC, which are required to change device drivers.
USB debugging and developer options are not required for MTP file transfer. Leave them disabled unless you need them for something else.
Step-by-step instructions
Work through these steps in order and stop once the phone appears in File Explorer. In most cases the driver built into Windows is all you need, and a separate ZTE download is only a fallback.
- Connect the phone to the PC and unlock it.
- Open the USB notification on the phone (pull down the notification shade) and select File transfer, which may also be labelled File transfer / Android Auto or MTP depending on the Android version. If no notification appears, look for USB preferences in the phone's settings under connected devices.
- Wait a few seconds while Windows installs the device automatically. If the phone then appears under This PC in File Explorer, you are done.
- If it does not appear, right-click the Start button and open Device Manager.
- Look for the phone under Portable Devices, Other devices, or Universal Serial Bus devices. A yellow warning icon or a generic name such as MTP or Unknown device indicates a driver problem.
- Right-click the entry and choose Update driver.
- Choose Browse my computer for drivers, then Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer.
- If a list of device types appears, select Portable Devices. Then select MTP USB Device (or a similarly named standard MTP driver) and click Next.
- Unplug the phone, reconnect it, unlock it and confirm the File transfer mode again.
Wording in these dialogs differs slightly between Windows 10 and Windows 11, but the sequence is the same. If the standard MTP driver is not offered, open Windows Update and check optional updates for a driver listed for the device. As a last resort, install a USB driver package from ZTE's official support resources for your exact model. Some older ZTE phones also expose a small virtual drive containing an installer when first connected. Only use installers from official sources, and note what each package installs so you can remove it later.
To reverse a change, open the device's Properties in Device Manager and use Roll Back Driver on the Driver tab if it is available. You can also choose Uninstall device and reconnect the phone so Windows detects it again. A driver package installed separately can be removed from the installed apps list in Windows Settings.
Check the output
A working connection shows the phone by its model name under This PC in File Explorer. Inside it should be an internal storage folder, and a memory card folder too if a card is inserted. In Device Manager, the phone should be listed under Portable Devices with no warning icon.
To confirm transfers work in both directions, copy a small file from the phone to the PC, then copy a different small file back. Make sure both open normally after copying. Recently captured photos or recordings sometimes take a moment to appear, or show up only after reconnecting, because the phone has to index new media before listing it.
Keep in mind that MTP does not mount the phone as a regular drive with a letter. Some editing, audio and video applications cannot open files directly from the phone or save back to it. Copy files to a local folder first, work on them there, and then copy the results back. Files travel over the USB cable between your own devices, but check any third-party driver or sync tool separately for what it uploads or stores.
Common problems and next steps
The phone only charges: Reselect File transfer in the USB notification. Some phones revert to charging-only mode each time they are reconnected. If the option is missing or the PC detects nothing at all, try a different cable and port before changing drivers.
Device Manager shows code 28 or code 10: Code 28 means no driver is installed. Assign the standard MTP USB Device driver as described above. Code 10 means the device could not start. Uninstall the device, unplug the phone, restart Windows and reconnect. If the error returns, try another port or cable.
The phone appears as an ADB interface or a modem instead of a portable device: This usually means USB debugging or another USB mode is active. Switch the phone back to File transfer. If the extra interface is not needed, turning off USB debugging can make detection simpler.
The MTP driver installs but the phone folder is empty: Unlock the phone and look for a prompt asking whether to allow access to phone data. Allow it, then reopen the device in File Explorer.
The standard driver is missing on Windows N or KN: Install the Media Feature Pack that matches your Windows version, restart the PC, and repeat the driver steps.
If none of this helps, test the phone on another computer. If it fails there too, the cause is likely the phone's USB port or software rather than Windows drivers, and ZTE support or the device's service channel is the next step.
