How to Change Zoom Virtual Backgrounds on iPhone and iPad

Step-by-step help for setting or changing a Zoom virtual background on iPhone and iPad, including useful settings and common fixes.

Before you start

You can change a virtual background in the Zoom app for iOS and iPadOS before or during a meeting. The effect is applied by the app on your device, so a stable internet connection matters for the meeting itself, but the background processing depends mainly on your device and the image or video you choose.

Step-by-step instructions

Open the Zoom app and make sure you are signed in. Tap the More or Settings entry in the navigation area, then open Meetings or Background and Effects. On an iPad, the controls may appear in a wider settings layout, but the background options are in the same general area.

Select Virtual Background, then tap a built-in background or choose a photo or video from your library. If you want to turn the effect off, select None. During a meeting, open the More or Background and Effects control from the meeting toolbar and make the same selection.

Check the output

Look at the preview before joining or after changing the background. Check that the subject is separated cleanly from the background and that any chosen image is not stretched in a distracting way. If your device provides a physical green screen, using it can make the edge detection more consistent, but it is not required when the app supports background replacement.

For a still image, use a file with sensible pixel dimensions for the screen rather than a very small file that may appear soft. The app will convert or compress the source as needed. If you choose video, avoid heavily compressed files with visible blocky areas, because those defects become part of the visible background.

Common problems and next steps

If the background does not apply, close and reopen the app and check that the meeting controls are available. On iOS and iPadOS, allow camera access for Zoom in the device settings if the app cannot show a camera preview. Keep the framing simple: a clean, evenly lit subject usually separates better than a busy scene with many similar colors.

Useful order for a failed change:
1. Confirm Zoom has camera permission.
2. Select None, then select the background again.
3. Try a built-in background before a custom file.
4. If the file option fails, check that the format is supported by reopening the picker.
