How to Use Zoom Virtual Backgrounds on Android

Learn how to set up and adjust a Zoom virtual background on Android, including the settings to check before a call and how to fix common camera or background problems.

Before you start

Check that the Zoom app is installed and signed in on the Android device. Virtual background processing depends on the app version, device model, and camera access available to Zoom, so an older phone may have fewer options or may not support blurred or image backgrounds for the selected camera.

Allow Zoom to use the camera before joining a meeting. Android controls camera permission separately from the app, and a blocked permission can leave the background menu unavailable. If prompted during setup, choose the camera you intend to use for the call.

Step-by-step instructions

Start from the Zoom home screen or a meeting window. The exact path can vary slightly by app version, so use the first available option below.

1) Open the Zoom app and make sure you are not currently presenting your screen.

2) Tap your profile picture or the settings gear. In some versions, choose Meetings or Background and Effects from the settings list.

3) Open Background and Effects, sometimes labeled Virtual Background. If the option is missing, start a meeting, tap More, and open Background and Effects from the meeting controls.

4) Choose Blur to soften the room behind you, or select one of the built-in images. To add your own background, tap Add or the plus icon and choose an image from the device.

5) Use an image that matches the camera aspect ratio when possible. Wide or incorrectly shaped images may be cropped, stretched, or have empty areas.

6) Return to the meeting or start a test call to see the selected effect with the active camera.

Check the output

Look for a clean edge around your head and body rather than a sharp cutout or flicker. Move slowly, keep the phone steady, and avoid placing objects close behind you while checking the effect.

The result is easier to see in good, even lighting. Strong backlight or a very busy background can make the virtual background appear uneven, especially with lower camera resolution or reduced frame rate.

For a custom image, verify how the file displays in the meeting. Common image file formats work best when the picture is already in landscape orientation for a landscape camera view, with modest compression to avoid excessive file size.

Common problems and next steps

If the virtual background option is absent, confirm that Zoom has camera permission in Android settings, then close and reopen the Zoom app. On phones without full background support, the app may offer only Blur or no background effects.

When the background looks distorted, try a simpler source image with landscape orientation. Avoid images with fine text or transparent areas, because transparency may not be preserved when the file is processed for display.

If your body appears to jump or break up, improve lighting on your face and reduce sudden movement. Lower frame rate can also make motion look less smooth, so close other camera-heavy apps and keep the phone cool.

When a custom file will not appear, check that it uses a supported image format and open it again from the gallery. The selected camera must still be active; switching cameras during a meeting may require reopening the background menu.
