Zoom F2-BT Timecode Sync: Setup and Requirements

A practical guide to setting up timecode sync on the Zoom F2-BT field recorder, including Bluetooth pairing, verification steps, and common sync issues.

Before you start

Timecode sync on the Zoom F2-BT runs between two local devices. The recorder receives timecode from the Zoom F2 Control app over Bluetooth, so no cloud service or external timecode device is required for this workflow. Check that your phone or tablet can run the current version of the Zoom F2 Control app, that Bluetooth is enabled, and that both devices have sufficient battery for the session. For attached-camera workflows, make sure the camera is set to a compatible resolution and frame rate before recording. If possible, work in stable lighting and keep background audio manageable so the synced clip is easy to review.

Step-by-step instructions

The F2-BT has a built-in Bluetooth module, but the exact button labels and menu order can differ by firmware and app version. Use these steps as the general sequence and confirm names on your current firmware.

Pair the recorder with the Zoom F2 Control app

Open the Zoom F2 Control app and select the F2-BT as the connected recorder. Confirm the selected camera or audio entry is correct if the app is also being used for camera control. If an earlier device is paired, remove it from the app first to avoid the app attaching to the wrong recorder.

Enable timecode output from the app

In the app, open the timecode or synchronization settings and enable timecode transmission to the F2-BT. Keep the recorder awake and within a short distance of the phone during pairing and transfer. If this is the first pairing, accept any Bluetooth authorization prompt on the phone. If the app requests camera permission, grant it only for camera-related functions; timecode transfer by itself does not need camera access.

Confirm sync state on the recorder

Check the recorder display or app status for a connected or synchronized state. The F2-BT stores timecode locally after transfer; it does not need a continuous Bluetooth connection during the take. After confirming sync, you can begin recording.

Check the output

Record a short test clip, stop recording, and open the file in an editor or player that can display timecode. Confirm that the starting timecode matches the expected value sent from the app and that the frame rate does not conflict with the camera project settings. In the Zoom F2 Control app, check that the recorder is still reported as synchronized. Do not remove Bluetooth authorization or update firmware between the test clip and the full take if you are using the same sync state for both.

Common problems and next steps

If the F2-BT does not appear in the app, turn Bluetooth off and on once, close and reopen the app, and try pairing again. If the camera is listed as unavailable, confirm the app has the necessary camera permission and that the recorder is no longer paired to another phone or tablet. A difference between camera and audio timecode is often caused by conflicting frame rates or a sync performed before the final recording settings were chosen. When sync succeeds but audio is unusable, reduce competing background sound, reposition the recorder, or revise the input level. Check the manufacturer firmware notes for feature or menu changes in your app version before changing a working setup.
