How to Access and Use the YouTube Live Dashboard

Practical guide to opening the YouTube Live dashboard, checking stream status and using key controls before and during a live stream.

Before you start

You need a YouTube channel with live streaming access. The live dashboard runs in a web browser, so have your channel login ready and use a Chromium-based browser such as Chrome or Edge, or Firefox. No local broadcast software is required just to open or manage the dashboard; encoding can be done later through browser-based streaming or an external encoder configured with your stream key.

Step-by-step instructions

Open YouTube, sign in, and select the Create button, shown as a plus icon in the upper right. Choose Go live from the menu. If this is your first live stream, YouTube may ask you to verify your account or wait for live access to become available.

The screen that follows is the Live Control Room or live dashboard. From the Stream tab, you can choose a streaming method: use the webcam option for a browser-based stream, or select the stream key method when connecting a hardware encoder or software such as OBS.

Set the title, description and visibility before going live. Check the camera and microphone controls shown in the browser stream preview. If the live dashboard opens in the older layout, use the profile menu or channel settings to check whether the current channel interface has a separate Go live entry, because menu wording can vary by account version.

Check the output

Confirm that the dashboard shows your selected input and a preview or status indicator. When you start the stream, the status should change to live and the preview should match the selected camera or encoder. Monitor the health indicator and audio meter if available, but be aware that the exact indicators depend on the streaming method and current dashboard version.

Common problems and next steps

If Go live is missing, sign out and back in, check that the channel is verified, or open the dashboard from the channel's content page. A black preview with a working stream often points to the browser camera permission, the selected input device, or an encoder that is sending video but no audible or visible source. If the dashboard reports that the stream key is incorrect, copy the key again into your encoder rather than reusing an old value.

After the stream ends, return to the dashboard to review stream health information or start a new stream. The live dashboard is also the place to check scheduled live streams, but avoid treating the dashboard preview as a substitute for checking the public stream on another device.
