Windows Media Device Setup for App Permissions

Step-by-step instructions for allowing Windows apps to use your camera, microphone, and other media devices, plus checks for privacy settings and common fixes.

Before you start

This procedure applies to Windows 10 and Windows 11. You need an account with permission to change system settings, usually an administrator account. Windows media device access is handled locally through Settings, so no separate service or account sign-in is required for the basic setup. Confirm that the camera or microphone you want to use is connected and recognized by Windows before changing app permissions.

Step-by-step instructions

Use these steps to let apps access a camera or microphone. The process is reversible because you can return to the same settings and turn access off again.

  • Open Settings and select Privacy & security.
  • Select Camera or Microphone under App permissions.
  • Turn on Camera access or Microphone access if it is off.
  • Turn on Let apps access your camera or Let apps access your microphone.
  • In the app list, turn on access for each app that should use the device.
  • If the app is a desktop application, keep Let desktop apps access your camera or microphone turned on.

On Windows 10, the same controls appear under Settings, Privacy, and then Camera or Microphone. The option names may differ slightly depending on the Windows version, but the access flow is the same: enable device access for the system, then enable it for the specific app.

Some video call and audio apps show their own permission prompt the first time they try to use a device. Accept that prompt only when you want the app to have access. You can also use the reset button for an app in Windows Settings to clear its existing permission state, after which the app may prompt again.

Check the output

Open an app that uses the camera or microphone and start a preview or recording function. The app should show video from the camera or respond to microphone input. In the Windows permission list, the app should remain enabled after you close and reopen Settings. Keep in mind that some apps do not expose every supported resolution or frame rate, and the available formats depend on the device driver and the app.

Common problems and next steps

If the device is still not available, first check whether another app is using the camera or microphone. Close other programs that might hold exclusive access, then try again.

A device may also fail if its driver is disabled or outdated. Open Device Manager, find the device under Cameras or Audio inputs and outputs, and verify that it is enabled. If a driver update is available, install it through Device Manager or the device manufacturer's update channel.

For a missing microphone or camera, confirm that the cable is connected and that any physical privacy shutter or mute switch is open. On a laptop, check whether the device has a keyboard shortcut or function key that disables the camera or microphone. If access was previously blocked for a browser, check the site permission in that browser in addition to the Windows settings, because browsers enforce a separate permission layer.
