Troubleshooting Wi-Fi Calling Connection Problems

Practical steps to fix Wi-Fi calling when it is not working on your phone. Check settings, permissions, network requirements and how to confirm the connection.

Identify the symptom and environment

Start with what you actually see. Wi-Fi calling may not activate, may fail only during calls, or may connect but drop after a short time. The problem can also appear as a missing Wi-Fi Calling icon even though the phone is connected to a wireless network. Record the phone model, operating system version and the app used for the call if it is a third-party calling app.

Note where the issue occurs. A home router, office network, public hotspot or hotel Wi-Fi can behave differently because some networks allow the required connections while others block them. If the problem happens in only one location, the network may be the cause rather than the phone.

Isolate where the fault occurs

Separate the phone from the network. Confirm the phone has a stable internet connection by opening a simple website in a browser while Wi-Fi calling is active. If browsing also fails, the router or internet service is the first thing to check. If browsing works but Wi-Fi calling does not, the issue is more likely in phone settings, carrier settings or the network's call-related restrictions.

Check the phone permissions that can affect calling. The Phone app may need microphone permission, and the contact or dialer app may need permission to manage calls. On many phones, Wi-Fi Calling is a separate toggle inside the Phone app settings rather than the main Wi-Fi settings, so look in both places before assuming the feature is unavailable.

If a second network is available, connect to it briefly. A mobile hotspot from another phone can help show whether the original router is blocking a required service. Avoid installing extra calling apps just for testing; use the built-in dialer first whenever possible.

Try reversible fixes in order

1. Turn Wi-Fi Calling off and on

Open the Phone app, go to its settings or call settings, and look for Wi-Fi Calling. Turn the feature off, wait several seconds and turn it back on. This re-registers the service without deleting anything.

2. Restart the phone

Restart the phone after confirming the toggle is enabled. This clears temporary network state and can restore the Wi-Fi Calling indicator without changing saved settings.

3. Reconnect to Wi-Fi

Forget the current Wi-Fi network in the phone's Wi-Fi settings and join it again. Enter the password if prompted. The exact menu wording varies by version, but the option is usually found by opening the saved network's details.

4. Check airplane mode and network settings

If the phone was recently used in airplane mode, switch airplane mode on and off again. Also confirm that Wi-Fi is enabled afterward, because turning airplane mode on can disable it.

5. Check the router without making broad changes

If the failure occurs only at one location, log in to the router and look for settings that may block calling services, such as firewall rules or a guest network isolation option. Avoid disabling security features as a test. If the router has a support page for VoIP or Wi-Fi Calling, follow only the specific guidance for that model.

Confirm the result

Look for the Wi-Fi Calling label or icon on the status bar or in the Phone app before making a call. Then make a short test call while the phone is connected to Wi-Fi. If the call completes and stays connected, watch the indicator during the call and confirm it remains active.

The reason for the failure may still matter if the issue returns. Keep a note of which change fixed it: toggling the setting, reconnecting to Wi-Fi, changing the network or restarting the phone.

If the problem remains

Record the phone model, carrier, exact operating system version and whether Wi-Fi calling works on another network. Also note any error shown in the Phone app and whether regular mobile calls work normally. These observations help distinguish a carrier provisioning issue, a device setting problem or a blocked network.

Contact the carrier if Wi-Fi calling is missing from the settings or fails on every network. The carrier can verify whether the feature is enabled on the account and whether the phone or SIM setup supports it. Seek device support or repair only after the carrier confirms the service should be available and the same problem persists across networks.
