WhatsApp Video Call Link Limits

How many people can join a WhatsApp video call link, what depends on your app version and device, and how to check camera, permissions and link sharing before a call.

How many people can join a WhatsApp video call link?

A WhatsApp call link lets people join a call by opening a shared link instead of being called one by one. A call started from a link follows WhatsApp's regular group call limit, which is generally stated as 32 participants for group calls on phones. Once the call is full, more people cannot join until a place opens. The cap has changed over time and has differed between phones and desktop apps, so if the exact number matters for a planned meeting, confirm it in WhatsApp's current help pages for your device and app version.

How WhatsApp call links work

When you create a call link, you choose whether it is for a voice or a video call. The link itself is only an invitation. The call starts when people open it. Anyone who receives the link can use it to join, including people it was forwarded to. In practice, the link works like a key that can be passed on.

Some things are set by WhatsApp and can change between versions: the participant cap, how long a link stays valid, and which in-call controls are available. Treat any figure you read, including the one above, as something to check against your installed version.

Each person's video starts on their own device. The app needs camera permission and microphone permission in the phone or computer settings. The selected camera is the capture source: the front or back camera on a phone, or a built-in or external webcam on a computer. WhatsApp manages encoding, resolution, frame rate and bitrate automatically, based on network conditions and how many people are in the call. You do not get manual quality controls beyond any data-saving option your version may offer. With more participants, each video tile gets smaller and quality per person may drop.

Using call links in practice

  • Small group well under the cap: one link shared in the group chat is usually all you need.
  • Group close to or above the cap: split it into several calls, or use a tool built for large meetings, because extra people will not get in.
  • Some people joining from a computer: check that their desktop app supports video calls with your group size before you rely on it.
  • Private meeting: send the link only to the intended people and ask them not to forward it.
  • Before the call: open the camera, confirm the app has permission, check that the right camera is selected, and face a light source rather than sitting with a window behind you.

If your video looks dark, grainy or choppy, the link is rarely the cause. Poor lighting makes the image noisy, and a weak connection makes WhatsApp lower the bitrate. Better light in front of you usually helps more than anything else you control, because WhatsApp handles the encoding itself. WhatsApp does not document built-in call recording. If you record with a separate tool, you are responsible for the recording format and for getting consent from participants.

Limits and related questions

Do call links expire? WhatsApp documents a validity period for call links, but don't rely on a figure you remember. Check the current help page. If an older link stops working, create a new one.

Does screen sharing change the limit? Screen sharing is available in video calls in recent versions, but it does not raise the participant limit.

Is a link call private? WhatsApp states that personal calls are end-to-end encrypted. That protects call content in transit, but it does not stop anyone who has the link from joining. Controlling who receives the link is the main privacy step you can take yourself.

Why won't a link open? Common causes are an outdated app, a full call, an expired link, or a device or browser without calling support. WhatsApp in a web browser has had limited or no calling support compared with the phone and desktop apps. Update the app, then try again or ask for a new link.
