How to Turn WhatsApp Video Call Background Blur On or Off
Turn background blur on or off in a WhatsApp video call, check how it looks to the other person, and fix a missing option or blur that won't go away.
WhatsApp can blur the area behind you during a video call so the other person sees you clearly and your room less clearly. Blur is controlled from inside the call, not from a general settings menu. This guide covers turning it on, turning it off, checking the result and fixing the usual problems.
Before you start
Background effects are not available on every device or app version at the same time. If your app is out of date, or your phone or computer is not supported, the option may be missing. Blur only changes the video you send. It does not change what you see from the other person.
- Update WhatsApp from your device's app store, or update the desktop app.
- Make sure WhatsApp has camera permission in your phone or computer settings.
- On a computer, confirm which camera is selected in WhatsApp, especially if you have a webcam and a built-in camera.
- If it matters to you whether the blur is processed on your device or elsewhere, check WhatsApp's current help and privacy information. The call screen does not tell you.
Step-by-step instructions
Icon shapes, labels and their positions change between versions and platforms, so look for the control by its function rather than an exact location. Depending on the version, an effect you chose may or may not stay on for later calls. Check your self-view at the start of each call.
Turn background blur on
- 1. Start or join a WhatsApp video call and make sure your camera is on.
- 2. If the call controls are hidden, tap the screen (or move the pointer on desktop) to show them.
- 3. Open the effects control. It usually appears on or near your own video preview.
- 4. If the panel has separate sections for filters and backgrounds, go to backgrounds.
- 5. Select Blur.
- 6. Close the panel and check your self-view.
Turn background blur off
- 1. During the call, open the same effects control.
- 2. In the backgrounds section, choose the option that removes the effect, usually shown as none or as an empty or crossed-out choice.
- 3. Close the panel and confirm in your self-view that the room behind you is sharp again.
If the desktop app has no effects control
If you see no effects option in a desktop call, that build does not offer background effects. Some computers can blur the camera at the system level instead. Examples include Windows Studio Effects on supported hardware and the video effects on recent Macs. Some webcam utilities and virtual camera apps can do the same. A system-level blur applies to every app using that camera. Remember to switch it off afterwards.
Check the output
Your self-view shows the effect, but the other person receives a compressed stream. On a weak connection, WhatsApp may lower the resolution and frame rate, which makes rough edges around you more noticeable. The simplest check is to ask the other person how it looks.
- Move your head and hands. Check whether the edges around your hair, ears, glasses and fingers stay clean or flicker.
- Lean toward and away from the camera. Blur can briefly drop or misjudge the edge when you move quickly.
- Check lighting. A dim room or a bright window behind you makes it harder to separate you from the background.
- Do not treat blur as a privacy guarantee. Large text, screens or faces behind you can still be partly visible, especially during movement. Point the camera away from anything sensitive.
Common problems and next steps
The blur option is missing
Update WhatsApp and restart the app, then start a new video call. Effects only appear while your camera is on, not during voice calls. If the option still does not appear, your device or version may not support it yet. On a computer, you can use a system-level camera effect instead, as described above.
How to remove blur that keeps appearing
First, turn the effect off in the call's effects panel. If the background is still blurred, the blur is coming from somewhere else. On a computer, check your system camera effects and any webcam software. Also check whether WhatsApp's selected camera is a virtual camera from another app, because that app may be adding the blur. On a phone, check whether a system camera feature or another app's overlay is active. A camera can also look blurred overall because of a dirty lens or poor focus. Clean the lens and check the picture in your regular camera app.
The blur looks patchy or cuts parts of you off
Add light in front of you rather than behind you. Sit a little further from a cluttered background, and keep your head and shoulders fully in frame. Turn off any other filters running at the same time. Older devices may handle the effect less smoothly, so a plain wall behind you can work better than blur.
The call slows down or the camera stops after enabling blur
Background effects need extra processing on your device. Close other apps that use the camera or a lot of power, move to a stronger connection, or turn the blur off to see whether the call stabilizes. If the camera does not start at all, check that WhatsApp still has camera permission and that no other app is using the camera.
