How to Set a WeChat Video Call Background
Practical ways to blur or replace your background on WeChat video calls: built-in options, phone and computer camera effects, virtual cameras, and checks.
WeChat video calls send your camera feed as it is, so changing what appears behind you depends on two things: whether your WeChat version has a built-in effects option, and whether your phone or computer can apply a background effect at the camera level. This guide covers both routes, explains how to confirm the effect reaches the other person, and shows how to undo it.
Before you start
WeChat features differ by version, region and device, so do not assume a virtual background option exists in your app. Update WeChat first, then check the controls shown during a video call. If there is no background or effects control, use an effect provided by your operating system, your device maker or a virtual camera app.
- Camera permission: WeChat must be allowed to use the camera in your phone or computer privacy settings.
- Selected camera: know which camera WeChat uses, especially on a computer with both a built-in and an external webcam.
- Supported hardware: some system effects only work on specific devices, such as recent Macs or Windows PCs that support Windows Studio Effects.
- Lighting: background separation usually works better with even light on your face and a clear contrast between you and the background.
- Where processing happens: system camera effects are generally described by their vendors as running on the device, but confirm this in the vendor's privacy documentation. For third-party virtual camera apps, check what the app collects before installing it.
Step-by-step instructions
Option 1: Check WeChat's own call controls
- Update WeChat to the latest version available for your device.
- Start a video call with a contact you trust, so you can test without pressure.
- Look through the on-screen controls for a background, blur, beauty or effects option.
- If you find one, turn it on and watch your self-view. If you find nothing, your version does not offer it on this device; continue with one of the options below.
Option 2: iPhone or iPad
iOS and iPadOS include a Portrait video effect that blurs the background, but it only works in apps that support it. Start a WeChat video call, open Control Center, and tap Video Effects. If Portrait appears and can be turned on, the blur applies to the call. If the tile is missing or Portrait is unavailable while WeChat is using the camera, the effect is not supported for WeChat on your current software version. Turn Portrait off the same way to return to the normal feed.
Option 3: Android phones
Some Android manufacturers add video call enhancements, such as background blur or replacement, that work in selected third-party apps. Names and locations vary by brand and software version, so search your phone's settings for terms such as video call, video effects or background. If the feature lists compatible apps, check whether WeChat is included before relying on it. Disable the feature in the same place to revert.
Option 4: Mac
Recent versions of macOS provide video effects for any app that uses the camera, including the WeChat desktop app. Start a video call, then open the Video Effects menu from the menu bar while the camera is active. Choose Portrait for background blur. Newer macOS versions also offer a Background option for built-in or custom images on supported Macs. Availability depends on your macOS version and hardware, generally Macs with Apple silicon. Turn the effect off in the same menu to revert.
Option 5: Windows PC
On PCs that support Windows Studio Effects, background blur is applied by the camera system, so WeChat receives the already-processed image. Open Settings, go to Bluetooth & devices, then Cameras, select your camera and turn on the background effect. Studio Effects can also appear in Quick Settings. If the option is missing, your hardware does not support it. Some laptop makers include their own camera utility with a blur option. Check that utility's documentation to see whether it applies to all apps.
Option 6: A virtual camera on a computer
A virtual camera app takes your real camera as a capture source, replaces or blurs the background, and presents the result as a new camera device. Set up the background in that app, start its virtual camera output, then select the virtual camera in WeChat's camera choice if your version offers one. Not every app accepts virtual cameras, so confirm that WeChat lists and displays the device before an important call. To revert, select your physical camera again or stop the virtual camera.
Check the output
Your self-view shows what the camera sends, but the other person sees it after WeChat's compression and network adjustments. Ask a trusted contact to describe what they see, or call a second device you own.
- Edges: move your head and hands. Look for hair, fingers or shoulders that flicker, disappear or blend into the background.
- Lighting: if separation is patchy, add soft front light and avoid a bright window behind you.
- Motion and frame rate: background effects use processing power. Choppy video may mean the device or connection is overloaded.
- Detail: a lower connection bitrate reduces resolution, so a detailed background image may look softer on the other end than in your preview.
- Custom images: if your tool accepts your own background picture, use one whose aspect ratio and orientation match your camera feed, in a file format the tool lists as supported. Transparent areas in an image are not a reliable way to show your real surroundings, so use a fully opaque picture.
Common problems and next steps
The effect works in another app but not in WeChat: on phones, the effect may only support specific apps. On computers, check the selected camera. Windows Studio Effects, for example, applies to supported built-in cameras, so an external webcam chosen in WeChat would bypass it.
Black screen or no video: confirm camera permission for WeChat in your system privacy settings. On iPhone, this is in the WeChat entry in Settings. On Mac and Windows, check the camera section under Privacy & Security. Close other apps that may be holding the camera, and if you use a virtual camera, make sure its output is running before you start the call.
Blurry or jumpy cut-out: improve the lighting, sit a little farther from a plain wall, and avoid clothing that matches the background colour. Turning off other effects such as beauty filters can reduce the processing load.
Changed the wrong background: the chat background setting in WeChat only changes the wallpaper of a conversation on your own screen. It does not affect what contacts see during a video call.
No software option available: a physical solution is always available and works on every device. Tidy the visible area, face a plain wall, or use a simple backdrop. Combined with good lighting, this often looks cleaner than a digital cut-out.
