Webcam Not Detected: Troubleshooting the Next Step
Separate webcam detection, camera permission and input selection to identify what to check next when your camera is missing or unavailable.
When your webcam is not detected, first check whether it is missing from the camera choices or is listed but unavailable. Device detection, permission to use the camera and selection of the active camera are separate checks. The appropriate next step depends on which one is failing.
Check whether the camera is listed
Open the camera or video settings in the application you want to use. Look for the intended webcam in its input choices. If it appears, select it before continuing. A listed camera does not establish that access is allowed or that video capture is working.
If the webcam is absent, the immediate issue is that this application is not offering it as an available input. That observation alone does not establish whether the cause is in the application, operating system or camera.
Check camera access separately
If you see a camera permission prompt or an access-denied message, review the camera access controls that apply to your setup. For a browser-based tool, check the website’s camera permission as well as any applicable operating-system controls. For an installed application, check its applicable camera access settings. Exact controls and menu names depend on the platform.
After changing a relevant permission, return to the application and check its camera selection and preview again. Treat permission status and the presence of a usable video image as separate observations.
If the webcam is still missing
Check whether your operating system lists the camera, using the device information available on your platform. Record whether it is absent there too or missing only from the application. This distinction helps define the problem, but it does not by itself identify the cause.
No operating system, browser, application, webcam model or diagnostic results were supplied for this guide. There is therefore insufficient evidence to identify a specific fault or recommend a particular driver, compatibility fix or hardware replacement. For more targeted troubleshooting, provide those details, whether the camera is built in or external, and the exact error message.
Keep microphone troubleshooting separate
Webcam video capture and microphone audio capture are separate inputs. A working microphone does not confirm that the camera is detected, permitted or selected. If your picture works but sound does not, check the microphone’s availability, permission and active input selection separately.
