How to Install a Vivo MTP Driver on Windows 10

Get a vivo phone recognized for file transfer on Windows 10, including 64-bit systems: set the USB mode, install the built-in MTP driver and fix common detection problems.

MTP (Media Transfer Protocol) lets Windows browse a phone's photos, videos, recordings and other files over USB. On Windows 10 a vivo phone normally uses the generic MTP driver that ships with Windows, not a separate vivo package. Most connection problems come from the phone's USB mode, the cable, or a driver that Windows assigned incorrectly, and they can be fixed without downloading anything.

Before you start

  • A USB cable that supports data, not only charging. Some cables bundled with power banks or accessories carry power only.
  • The phone unlocked, because many Android-based phones block file access while the screen is locked.
  • A Windows account with administrator rights, which is needed to change drivers in Device Manager.
  • Your Windows edition. Windows 10 N and KN editions do not include media components that MTP depends on until Microsoft's Media Feature Pack is installed.
  • Your system type (32-bit or 64-bit), shown in Settings under System, then About. This matters only if you install a driver package from outside Windows.

The whole process runs locally on your computer. Installing the Windows MTP driver does not require an account or an online service, although Windows Update may be used to fetch driver or feature updates if your settings allow it.

Step-by-step instructions

1. Set the phone to file transfer mode

  • Connect the phone to a USB port directly on the computer rather than through a hub.
  • Unlock the phone and open the notification shade.
  • Tap the USB notification and choose the file transfer option. The exact wording differs between Funtouch OS and OriginOS versions; avoid modes such as charging only or photo transfer (PTP) if you need access to all files.
  • If the phone asks whether to allow access to its data, confirm on the phone.

If Windows now shows the phone in File Explorer under This PC, the driver is already working and no further steps are needed.

2. Check the device in Device Manager

  • Right-click the Start button and select Device Manager.
  • Look under Portable Devices for the phone's name or a generic MTP entry.
  • If it is missing there, check Other devices or Universal Serial Bus devices for an unknown device or an entry with a yellow warning icon that appears when the phone is plugged in and disappears when it is unplugged.

3. Assign the built-in MTP driver manually

  • Right-click the phone's entry and choose Update driver.
  • Select Browse my computer for drivers, then Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer.
  • If a device type list appears, choose Portable Devices or an Android device category if one is offered.
  • Select MTP USB Device and click Next.
  • Unplug the phone, plug it back in and select file transfer mode on the phone again if prompted.

This change is reversible. If the result is worse, open the device's Properties in Device Manager, go to the Driver tab and use Roll Back Driver when it is available, or uninstall the device and reconnect the phone so Windows detects it again.

4. Windows 10 N and KN editions

On these editions, MTP devices often fail to appear until the Media Feature Pack is added. On recent Windows 10 builds it is installed as an optional feature from Settings; on older builds it was a separate download from Microsoft that has to match your Windows version. Restart the computer afterwards and reconnect the phone.

Check the output

  • The phone appears under This PC in File Explorer with its internal storage visible.
  • In Device Manager, the device is listed under Portable Devices without a warning icon.
  • You can open folders such as DCIM and copy a test file from the phone to the computer and back.

MTP has limits worth knowing. Files are copied rather than accessed as a normal drive, so some programs cannot open or edit them directly on the phone. Large transfers may be slower than with a USB storage device, and the folder view can lag behind recent changes on the phone until you reconnect. For photos and videos, copying them to the computer first is the most reliable way to edit them.

Common problems and next steps

Looking for a vivo MTP driver for Windows 10 64-bit

The MTP driver included with Windows 10 is available on both 32-bit and 64-bit installations, so a separate 64-bit download is usually unnecessary. If you do install a vendor or third-party driver package, it must match your system type, and you should verify that it comes from a source you trust and is digitally signed. Driver bundles from unofficial download sites can include unwanted software, so treat their claims as something to check rather than accept.

The phone only charges

Try a different cable and a different USB port, then reselect the file transfer option on the phone. Charge-only cables are a frequent cause, and the phone may revert to charging mode each time it is reconnected.

MTP USB Device shows an error or a code in Device Manager

Uninstall the device in Device Manager, unplug the phone, restart Windows and reconnect it. Make sure pending Windows updates are installed, since media and driver components are updated that way. On N and KN editions, confirm the Media Feature Pack is present.

The phone appears but shows no files

Unlock the phone and confirm any access prompt on its screen. If the storage still looks empty, disconnect, switch the USB mode to charging and back to file transfer, then reconnect.

Still not detected

Test the phone on another computer to tell a phone-side problem from a Windows one. If it fails everywhere, the USB port on the phone or the cable is the likely cause, and vivo support is the next step. If it works elsewhere, focus on the original computer's USB ports, drivers and updates.
