Virtual Green Screen in OBS: Which Plugin You Need and How to Set It Up

How to get a virtual green screen in OBS Studio without a backdrop: Chroma Key vs background-removal plugins, setup steps, and the order of checks when it fails.

The short answer

OBS Studio's built-in Chroma Key filter only works if a real green or blue backdrop is behind you. To remove or replace your background without a backdrop, you need a separate background-removal filter. This can be a third-party OBS plugin, or, on Windows PCs with a supported NVIDIA RTX graphics card, NVIDIA's background removal effect, which OBS can use after NVIDIA's video effects runtime is installed. In both cases, you apply the filter to your webcam source, and an image, video or color source placed underneath it in OBS shows through as the new background.

Three things change which route fits you:

  • Whether you have a physical backdrop. If you do, the built-in Chroma Key filter is enough and no plugin is needed.
  • Your operating system and graphics hardware. The NVIDIA option is limited to Windows with supported NVIDIA RTX cards. Third-party plugins publish their own lists of supported systems.
  • Where the video needs to end up. For streaming or recording from OBS, the filter is all you need. To use the result in a video-call app, you also have to start OBS's Virtual Camera and select it in that app.

Chroma Key and virtual background removal are different tools

Chroma Key makes every pixel close to a chosen color transparent. It needs an evenly lit backdrop in a color that does not appear in your clothing or skin. Without one, it either erases parts of you or leaves the room visible.

A virtual green screen filter works differently. It uses a segmentation model to estimate which pixels are a person and which are background, then hides the background. It needs no backdrop. In exchange, it uses more CPU or GPU power, and the edges around hair, hands and fast movement are usually less clean than a well-lit physical screen.

Make sure OBS can see your webcam first

A background-removal filter can only process video that OBS is already receiving. Before installing anything, check these three separate layers in order:

  • Detection: the operating system recognizes the camera. It appears in the system's camera or device list, and another camera app can show its picture.
  • Permission: the operating system allows OBS to use the camera. On macOS, OBS must be enabled under System Settings > Privacy & Security > Camera. On Windows, camera access for desktop apps must be allowed under Settings > Privacy & security > Camera.
  • Selection: in OBS, the Video Capture Device source has the correct camera chosen in its Device setting, and the preview shows a live picture.

The filter affects video only. Your microphone is captured through a separate audio source in OBS. Removing the background has no effect on audio, and audio problems need their own checks.

Setting up a background-removal filter

The exact menu names depend on which plugin you use, but the workflow is generally the same:

  • Close OBS. Download the plugin from its developer's official release page, choosing the build that matches your operating system and your OBS Studio version.
  • Install it by following the developer's instructions, then reopen OBS.
  • In your scene, right-click the webcam source (Video Capture Device) and choose Filters.
  • Under Effect Filters, click the plus button and add the background-removal filter. It is usually named something like Background Removal.
  • Adjust the filter's settings, such as threshold, edge smoothing or blur. Watch the preview while you move your head and hands, and look for a balance between clean edges and keeping all of you visible.
  • To show a replacement background, add an Image, Media or Color Source to the same scene, then drag it below the webcam source in the Sources list.

Using the result in Zoom, Teams or a browser

Other applications do not see OBS filters automatically. Click Start Virtual Camera in OBS. Then, in the call app or the browser's camera settings, choose the OBS Virtual Camera instead of your physical webcam. A browser may also ask for camera permission for the site, and that permission is separate from OBS's own access. Select your microphone in the call app as usual, because the OBS Virtual Camera carries video only.

If it doesn't work, check in this order

  • The filter is missing from the Filters list. The plugin may not have installed correctly, or the build may not match your OBS version or operating system. Reinstall the correct build and restart OBS.
  • The NVIDIA option is missing or shows an error. Confirm that the PC runs Windows, has a supported NVIDIA RTX card, and has NVIDIA's video effects runtime installed.
  • The webcam preview is black. Go back to detection, permission and selection. Also close other apps that might be using the camera, because many webcams serve only one application at a time.
  • The background is only partly removed, or parts of you disappear. Adjust the threshold and smoothing settings. More even lighting on your face and a less cluttered background generally help segmentation models.
  • The video stutters after you add the filter. Background removal is processing-intensive. Try lowering the webcam's resolution or frame rate, or close other heavy applications.
  • The call app still shows your real background. Check that Virtual Camera is started in OBS and that the call app's camera is set to the OBS Virtual Camera, not your webcam.
