Video Capture Device Audio Inactive in OBS: Why It Happens and How to Fix It
Why an OBS Video Capture Device shows no audio or appears inactive, and how to capture your webcam microphone with the right audio settings or a separate input source.
The short answer
In most cases, a Video Capture Device source in OBS has no audio because the webcam's microphone is not part of that source. A webcam usually presents its camera and its built-in microphone to the operating system as two separate devices. The video source picks up the camera. The microphone has to be attached explicitly, either inside the video source's properties (where the platform supports it) or as its own Audio Input Capture source. If the source is attached and still shows no level, the likely causes are the source being hidden or deactivated, muting, operating-system permissions, or another application holding the device.
One condition limits this answer. The steps below are based on how OBS is generally documented to work, not on testing of a specific webcam, OBS version or operating system. No model-specific evidence was available, so menu names may differ slightly in your version.
Why the camera and microphone are separate
USB webcams typically show up as a video device and a separate audio input device, often with similar names. OBS's Video Capture Device source is built to read the video device. On Windows it can also take audio, but only if you tell it which audio device to use. On Linux, the video capture source handles video only. On macOS, a separate audio source is generally the dependable route. Webcam audio therefore does not appear automatically just because the camera picture does.
Fix 1: Attach the microphone inside the video source (Windows)
- Right-click the Video Capture Device source and open Properties.
- Find the option labeled Use custom audio device and enable it.
- In the Audio Device list, choose the webcam's microphone. It often carries the camera's brand or model name.
- Check Audio Output Mode. To get the audio into the OBS mixer, it should be set to capture audio only, not one of the desktop output modes.
- Click OK and speak into the webcam. The source's meter in the Audio Mixer should move.
Audio Output Mode controls where the captured sound goes. The capture-only setting sends audio to the OBS mixer, where you can record and stream it. The desktop output settings play the audio through your system output instead. That can make the OBS mixer look silent or inactive even though sound is reaching your speakers.
Fix 2: Add the microphone as its own source (any platform)
In the Sources panel, add an Audio Input Capture source and select the webcam's microphone as the device. This keeps audio independent of the video source, so you can mute or filter one without touching the other. It is the more portable option, and it is the usual route on macOS and Linux. Use only one method at a time. Capturing the same microphone through both the video source and a separate audio source produces a doubled or echoing signal.
When the audio still shows as inactive or silent
- Source not live: audio from a source generally only flows when that source is in the active scene and visible. Check the eye icon and the current scene.
- Deactivate when not showing: if this option is enabled in the video source's properties, the device, including its audio, shuts off whenever the source is not displayed.
- Muted or zeroed: check the mute icon and volume slider in the Audio Mixer. Also open Advanced Audio Properties and confirm the source is assigned to the tracks you record or stream.
- Operating-system permissions: on Windows and macOS, privacy settings can block desktop applications from using the microphone. OBS must be allowed.
- Device in use elsewhere: a conferencing app or the camera vendor's own software may hold the microphone. Close other applications that use it and reopen the source.
- Wrong device selected: webcams with similar names, or audio devices that changed after a reconnect, can leave the source pointed at the wrong input. Reselect the device after plugging the camera back in.
How this affects the OBS Virtual Camera
The OBS Virtual Camera sends video only. Fixing your webcam audio inside OBS makes it available for recording and streaming, but it does not send that audio to Zoom, Teams or similar apps through the virtual camera. In the conferencing app, select the webcam microphone (or another microphone) directly as the audio input. If you need OBS-processed audio in a call, you would have to route it through a virtual audio device. That is a separate setup and is not covered by the evidence available here.
What could not be confirmed
No device-specific measurements, version details or test results were available. This guide therefore cannot say whether a particular webcam's microphone works with a particular OBS release, or how its speech quality compares with other microphones. If the steps above do not restore audio, the next checks are whether the microphone works in the operating system's own sound settings and whether the manufacturer documents any known issues.
