MY WEBCAM TEST GUIDE

Use the built-in camera on a Chromebook

Use a Chromebook’s built-in camera for video and pair it with the internal microphone so calls capture speech. Check camera and mic permissions if either is missing.

What the built-in camera does

A Chromebook’s built-in camera is the default webcam. You can use it in the Camera app and in browser video without extra hardware. Speech is a separate path: most Chromebooks capture voice with the built-in system microphone, not with a microphone that lives inside the camera module the way many USB webcams do. Turn the camera on for picture, then confirm the internal microphone is selected and allowed if you need your voice on the call.

Why that split matters for speech

Camera permission and microphone permission are independent. A live preview only proves video is working. If a call has picture but no voice, the usual cause is that the app is still waiting for microphone access, or that it is pointed at the wrong input, such as a disconnected headset or an external webcam mic that is not plugged in. In call or browser settings, choose the Chromebook’s internal microphone unless you have attached another device you intend to use.

Turn the camera on

  • Open the Launcher and start the Camera app. A live preview means the built-in camera is available and not blocked.
  • If the preview is black, open any privacy shutter or slider on the bezel, then check that camera access is allowed for the Camera app in system settings.
  • For a video call, allow camera access when the browser or app prompts. If you previously blocked it, restore camera permission for that app in Chrome OS settings.
  • Watch for a privacy light when the model has one. That light indicates the camera is active; it does not tell you whether the microphone is on.

Capture speech with the same session

Treat audio input as its own checklist. Grant microphone permission when the call asks. In the call’s audio or device list, select the internal microphone. Speak at a normal distance from the keyboard deck or display bezel; exact mic placement varies by Chromebook and is not specified here. If you later plug in a USB webcam, headset, or dongle, the system may switch to that device’s microphone. Reselect the input you want before you rely on the call.

What this guide cannot specify

Chromebook models differ in camera resolution, number of microphones, shutter design, and whether a rear camera exists. This article does not include model-by-model specifications, measured voice quality, or lab tests. If video or speech still fails after permissions and input selection are correct, the next action is to test the Camera app and a short recording on that device, then try a known-good headset so you can tell camera, internal mic, and app settings apart.
