MY WEBCAM TEST GUIDE

Use Shopify's Online Image Resizer

Resize product, collection, and blog images for Shopify using the built-in online image resizer. Learn the steps, settings, and what to check before publishing.

Before you start

Shopify includes an online image resizer in the admin when you add or replace an image. The resizing step runs through your Shopify admin, so you do not need to download a separate application. Keep your original file available in case you want to start over or use it for a different page. The resizer works with supported Shopify image types such as JPEG, PNG, WebP, and GIF.

Step-by-step instructions

To resize an image in Shopify, go to the place where the image is used, such as a product, collection, or blog post. Open the relevant page in the admin and go to the image area.

1. Choose the image

Select the existing image you want to change, or use the upload option to add a new one. If you are replacing a product photo, check that you are editing the correct variant image.

2. Open the resizing tool

Use the image editing option in the media settings. Shopify may show options such as crop, draw, or resize depending on your theme and the image type. Select resize to open the editor.

3. Set the pixel dimensions

Enter the width and height you need. Shopify may adjust the second value when you change the first to keep the aspect ratio the same. This helps avoid distortion. If you want a specific crop, use that control instead of manually entering mismatched values.

4. Save the result

Apply or save the edited image. Shopify will process the new version. The original image remains stored in the background, so you can return to the editor and change it again if needed.

5. Repeat for other images

Keep the same pixel dimensions and aspect ratio for similar product or collection images. Consistent sizing gives pages a cleaner appearance, but always check how the actual image looks in the live theme.

Check the output

After saving, preview the image on the product, collection, or blog page. Look for blur, unwanted cropping, or changes to the subject. If the image has a transparent background and your file format supports transparency, check edges against both light and dark page areas. Shopify compresses and may convert images when serving them, so the displayed version may not match the original pixel data exactly.

Common problems and next steps

If the image looks stretched, avoid changing width and height independently unless you intend to crop. Return to the editor and use scaling with the aspect ratio locked, or use the crop tool for a fixed frame.

If the online resizer is unavailable for a file, check the image format and upload a supported version such as JPEG or PNG. A localized browser translation can also change the names of editing controls, so switch the admin language temporarily if a setting is hard to find.

For images that need precise output settings or batch work, prepare the file in an image tool before uploading. Use the final pixel dimensions and an appropriate file format, then let Shopify handle the serving version. If the result still looks soft or washed out, compare it with a fresh upload rather than repeatedly resizing the same saved version.
