MY WEBCAM TEST GUIDE

How to Update a Logitech Webcam Driver

Update a Logitech webcam driver on Windows or macOS: use built-in system updates, Device Manager, Logitech companion apps and firmware tools, then verify the camera works.

Many current Logitech webcams are USB Video Class (UVC) devices. That means Windows and macOS run them with a built-in camera driver, and Logitech often does not offer a separate driver download. In practice, updating a Logitech webcam usually means keeping the operating system current, letting it reinstall its own camera driver when something is wrong, updating the Logitech app your model supports, and installing firmware if Logitech provides it for that camera.

Before you start

  • Find the exact model name. It is usually printed on the camera or its cable and is often shown in your system's device list.
  • Check that model on Logitech's official support pages. They list which software, firmware and operating systems each camera supports. Older models may only have legacy software or may not support current systems.
  • Sign in with an administrator account. Driver and firmware changes need administrator rights.
  • Close every app that may be using the camera, including video call apps, browsers and streaming software.
  • Connect the camera directly to a USB port on the computer, not through a hub or dock, especially before a firmware update.
  • Write down the current driver version, and the firmware version if your Logitech app shows it, so you can compare afterward.

Know where each part comes from. The driver and the update itself are installed locally. The files, however, are downloaded from Microsoft through Windows Update, from Apple through macOS updates, or from Logitech through its apps. Some Logitech apps may ask you to create or sign in to an account, and they may collect usage data. Read the app's own terms and privacy settings rather than assuming what it does.

Step-by-step instructions

Windows

  • 1. Install pending Windows updates. If Windows Update lists optional driver updates, check whether one is for your camera. Install it only if it clearly matches your device.
  • 2. Open Device Manager. One way is to right-click the Start button and choose Device Manager.
  • 3. Expand Cameras. On some systems the webcam appears under Imaging devices instead. Right-click the Logitech camera and choose Update driver, then Search automatically for drivers.
  • 4. If Windows reports that the best driver is already installed, that is normal for a UVC webcam and not an error.
  • 5. If the camera misbehaves, you can reinstall the driver. Right-click the camera, choose Uninstall device, unplug the camera, wait a few seconds and plug it back in. Windows then installs its built-in driver again. Leave any option to delete the driver software unchecked unless Logitech support tells you otherwise.
  • 6. If a recent driver change caused problems, open the camera's Properties, go to the Driver tab and use Roll Back Driver. This option works only when Windows kept the previous driver.
  • 7. Install or update the Logitech app named on your model's support page. Depending on the model, this may be Logi Tune, Logi Options+ or Logitech G HUB.
  • 8. If the app or the support page offers a firmware update, follow the on-screen instructions. Do not unplug the camera, restart the computer or let it sleep until the update finishes.

macOS

  • 1. Install available macOS updates. The system camera driver is part of macOS, so there is nothing separate to install for a UVC webcam.
  • 2. If your model's support page lists a Mac app or firmware updater, install it and follow its instructions. Keep the camera connected throughout any firmware update.
  • 3. Check camera permission for the apps you use. On recent versions this is under System Settings, then Privacy & Security, then Camera.

Driver changes can usually be undone through rollback or reinstalling. Firmware updates often cannot. Before you install firmware, read Logitech's notes for your model, and do not assume a downgrade is possible.

Check the output

  • In Device Manager, the camera should appear without a warning icon. Its Properties, under the Driver tab, show the driver provider, date and version. Microsoft is the expected provider when the built-in UVC driver is in use.
  • Open the Windows Camera app, the macOS camera preview in an app such as Photo Booth, or a browser-based webcam test. Confirm that the image appears.
  • In each app, make sure the selected camera is the Logitech device and not a built-in laptop camera or a virtual camera.
  • Check which resolution and frame rate the app offers and uses. Several things can limit them: the camera model, the USB port, the app or call service, and the connection speed. A driver update does not raise these limits beyond the camera's specifications.
  • Look at the image under your usual lighting. In dim light, many webcams lengthen exposure, which can lower the frame rate and add noise. That is not a driver fault.
  • If you updated firmware, confirm the new version in the Logitech app, provided it displays firmware information for your model.

Common problems and next steps

Camera not detected after the update: Try another USB port on the computer itself and check the cable for damage. In Device Manager, use Scan for hardware changes from the Action menu. If the problem started right after a driver change, roll the driver back or reinstall it as described above.

Black screen or a message that the camera is in use: Close other apps that might hold the camera, then check camera permission. On Windows 11, go to Settings, then Privacy & security, then Camera. Make sure camera access is on, including access for desktop apps if your app is a desktop program. On Windows 10, the same setting is under Settings, then Privacy, then Camera. In a browser, also allow camera access for the specific site.

Video call shows the wrong device: Open the app's audio and video settings and pick the Logitech camera manually. Many apps remember the last selected camera, so after reconnecting or updating you may need to choose it again.

Logitech app does not recognize the camera: Each Logitech app supports only certain models. Check your model's support page to see which app it lists. Not being recognized by one app does not mean the camera or driver is faulty.

Firmware update failed or stopped: Leave the camera connected and follow the recovery steps the updater shows. If the camera no longer works afterward, contact Logitech support with the model name and the exact error message.

Image looks blurry, dark or grainy: Improve the lighting, clean the lens, and check focus and exposure settings in the Logitech app or your video app. Reinstalling the driver rarely changes image quality.

Avoid third-party driver updater tools and unofficial driver download sites. Get updates only through your operating system's update service or Logitech's official software and support pages.
