MY WEBCAM TEST GUIDE

How to Access Udemy Video Transcripts

Open the transcript panel in the Udemy course player, choose a caption language, check transcript accuracy and fix a missing transcript button.

Udemy shows lecture transcripts inside its own course player. The transcript is built from the lecture's caption track, so it is only available when the lecture has captions. This guide covers opening the transcript, checking it against the audio, and what to do when the transcript option does not appear.

Before you start

Transcripts are part of Udemy's online service. You do not install transcription software, and no audio is processed on your computer. Make sure you have the following:

  • An account that is signed in and enrolled in the course, either a personal purchase or access through an organization plan.
  • A desktop or laptop web browser. The transcript panel is easiest to find in the browser version of the course player, and the mobile app layout may differ.
  • A video lecture. Articles, quizzes, coding exercises and downloadable resources have no transcript.
  • A lecture with captions. Whether captions exist, and in which languages, depends on the course.

If you plan to copy transcript text or paste it into another tool such as a translator, note-taking app or AI assistant, check the platform's terms and the instructor's rights first. Also check how that other tool stores the text you give it. Do not assume either is allowed or private by default.

Step-by-step instructions

  • 1. Sign in to Udemy in your browser and open the course from My learning.
  • 2. Select a video lecture and start playback. The player controls appear along the bottom of the video when you move the pointer over it.
  • 3. Click the captions (CC) control and choose a language. This list shows which caption tracks the lecture has. Tracks marked as automatic are machine-generated.
  • 4. In the same control bar, find the transcript button. If the icons are not labelled, hover over each one to see its tooltip.
  • 5. Click the transcript button. A panel opens next to or below the video, and the line being spoken is highlighted as the lecture plays.
  • 6. Click any line in the panel to jump the video to that point. This is useful for reviewing a specific explanation without scrubbing the timeline.
  • 7. To close the panel, click the transcript button again. This changes only the player view and does not affect your progress or the course content.

The transcript generally follows the caption language you selected. If it appears in an unexpected language, change the caption track first. Udemy updates its player from time to time, so icon positions and labels can differ from this description. The overall flow stays the same: captions first, then the transcript toggle in the player controls.

Check the output

Play a short section while reading the transcript. Check that the highlighted line moves in step with the speech and that clicking a line lands near the right moment. Pay close attention to technical vocabulary, product names, code identifiers and numbers. Machine-generated captions most often get these wrong.

The transcript is a separate text track. It does not depend on the video's resolution, bitrate, encoding or frame rate. Lowering the playback quality on a slow connection will not change the transcript text, and raising it will not make the transcript more accurate. Accuracy depends on how the caption track was created: written by the instructor or generated automatically.

If you copy lines into your own notes, check the result after pasting. Line breaks, timestamps and speaker changes may not carry over cleanly. Keep copied text for personal study unless the course terms clearly allow other use.

Common problems and next steps

No transcript button: first check that the current item is a video lecture and that the captions menu lists at least one language. If there are no captions, there is nothing to show as a transcript. If captions exist but the button is missing, widen the browser window or exit any compact or picture-in-picture view. Then reload the lecture, or try another browser with extensions disabled.

Transcript missing in the mobile app: switch to a desktop browser, where the transcript panel is part of the standard course player. Do not assume that lectures downloaded for offline viewing in the app include transcripts. Check this on your own device before relying on it.

Wrong language or poor accuracy: choose a different caption track if the course offers one. If instructor-written captions contain errors, tell the instructor through the course Q&A or contact Udemy support. Mention the lecture title and the approximate time of the error.

Downloading transcripts: the course player is designed for viewing transcripts while you watch. Do not count on a built-in export option. Screen-recording the lecture as a capture source, or saving it in another recording format to run your own transcription, may break the course terms. Check the terms before trying it. For study notes, copying the passages you need into your own document is the simplest approach within the player's normal use.
