Telegram Video Call Background Options

How to blur or change your background in a Telegram video call using system camera effects, a virtual camera, or a better physical setup, plus the limits of each.

Can you change your background in a Telegram video call?

Don't count on a built-in background blur or replacement in every Telegram app and version. Open the video options on the call screen in the version you use. If you see no background setting, you have three options: system camera effects, a virtual camera, or changing what is physically behind you.

Telegram's chat wallpapers only change how your chats look to you. They have no effect on the video the other person sees.

How a video call background is produced

Telegram sends whatever the selected camera delivers. Any blur or replacement happens either inside the app or before the video reaches it. In practice, that means one of these:

  • System effects: some computers and phones offer camera effects such as background blur at the operating system level. These apply to the feed that apps receive, and availability depends on your hardware and OS version.
  • Virtual camera: software that takes your real camera, processes the image (removal, replacement, overlays) and presents the result as a new camera device. You then choose that device as the camera in Telegram.
  • Physical background: whatever is actually behind you, with no processing at all.

Blur and replacement depend on segmentation: software estimates, frame by frame, which pixels belong to you and which belong to the room. This uses processing power, so on weaker devices it can lower the frame rate or resolution.

Setting up a background for a Telegram call

On a computer

  • Check whether your operating system or camera software offers a blur or background effect. Turn it on and preview it in a camera app first.
  • If you use a virtual camera, start that software before you open Telegram so the virtual device already exists.
  • In Telegram's call or video device settings, choose the virtual camera as the selected camera.
  • If the virtual camera isn't listed, restart Telegram. Also check that both the virtual camera software and Telegram have camera permission.
  • Make a short test call and look for ragged edges, lag and uneven lighting.

On a phone

Mobile options depend on the operating system and on whether it applies camera effects to the app you are using. During a call, look for video effects in the system's quick settings or control panel. If nothing appears for Telegram, improve the real scene instead: face away from clutter, sit in front of a plain wall, or change the camera angle.

Preparing a custom background image

If your virtual camera tool accepts a replacement image, match the image's aspect ratio to the capture source. Many webcams output 16:9, so pixel dimensions such as 1920×1080 or 1280×720 avoid stretching and cropping. Phones held upright produce a portrait image, so a landscape picture may be cropped heavily.

Use a common file format such as JPEG or PNG. Transparency is rarely useful in a full background, because nothing sits behind it; check how your tool handles transparent areas. Calm, low-detail images also work better: call video is compressed at a limited bitrate, so busy patterns can look blocky or smeared, and they take quality away from your face.

Lighting

Segmentation is more stable with even light on your face and clear contrast between you and the wall. Strong backlight from a window, or hair and clothing close in color to the background, often makes edges flicker or parts of you disappear.

Limits and related questions

Will a blurred or replaced background hide my room? Not reliably. Effects can fail at edges, during quick movement or when the light changes. Treat them as cosmetic, not as a privacy guarantee. For a sensitive space, change the physical scene or the camera angle.

Where is the video processed? It depends on the tool. Before using third-party background software, check its documentation to see whether processing stays on your device and what access it asks for.

Does a sharp background improve call quality? No. The background becomes part of the image before encoding. The resolution and bitrate the other person receives depend on Telegram's encoding and on network conditions, so a high-resolution image will not look sharper than the call allows. A separate screen recording also captures the processed image as it appears in the call window.

Why does the other person still see my real room? Check the selected camera in Telegram. After a device change, an update or a restart, it may have switched back to the physical webcam.

Does the effect apply to screen sharing? No. Camera background effects change only the camera feed, not the screen or window you share.
