MY WEBCAM TEST GUIDE

Can You Convert a Teams Meeting Chat to a Group Chat?

Learn how to move a Microsoft Teams meeting chat into a group chat, what carries over, and what to check when the chat history does not appear.

You cannot change an existing Microsoft Teams meeting chat into a regular group chat with one menu action. The meeting chat stays tied to the meeting. You can reuse the same participants by creating a new group chat, or continue using the meeting chat after the meeting ends as long as it remains available in your chat list.

Before you start

This process runs inside the Microsoft Teams app. Changing the chat type is not a local file operation, so your camera, microphone, resolution, frame rate, and lighting settings do not affect it. You need permission to start chats in your organization and access to the participants you want to include. If the meeting was recorded or saved in a channel, use the chat list for that channel rather than a separate meeting chat.

Meeting chat history does not automatically copy into a new group chat. Before creating a replacement chat, open the original meeting chat and note any links, decisions, or contacts you need to preserve.

Step-by-step instructions

Use these steps to move the same conversation to a regular group chat in the desktop or web version of Teams. The mobile app uses a similar path, but the exact position of the new chat button can differ by version.

1) Open Teams and select the Chat area.

2) Select the meeting chat you want to replace.

3) In the participant list or meeting details, identify the people you want to keep in the new conversation.

4) Start a new group chat and add those participants.

5) Name the new group chat so it is easy to distinguish from the meeting chat.

6) Paste the important information from the meeting chat into the new conversation. Plain text, links, and copied files can be added manually, but Teams does not transfer the chat timeline, reactions, or replies for you.

The original meeting chat remains separate. You can keep it as a record or remove it from your chat list, but removing it does not affect the new group chat.

Check the output

Open the new group chat and confirm that all intended participants appear and can post messages. The chat history before your first copied message will be absent, so verify that any required links, decisions, or shared files were added manually. If your organization restricts who can start or join group conversations, a missing participant or a blocked invitation may appear as a permission message rather than an error about the meeting chat.

Common problems and next steps

If a meeting chat disappears after the meeting, look in the main Chat list before assuming it was deleted. Meeting chats can be available after a meeting ends, but retention depends on the policies configured by your organization.

When the replacement group chat shows an error, check whether a participant is external to your organization or whether administrator settings block group chats. If the original meeting chat contains files that are not available in the new group chat, re-add each file through the attachment option in the new conversation.

For a recurring meeting, the meeting chat may continue to reappear with each occurrence. A separate group chat is usually the cleaner option when you want one lasting conversation independent of the meeting series, but it still requires moving the important content manually.
