How to Download and Install a Sony Walkman MTP Driver

Get your Sony Walkman recognized as an MTP device on Windows: where the driver comes from, how to reinstall it, and how to fix common connection errors.

Many Sony Walkman players connect to a computer through MTP (Media Transfer Protocol) rather than appearing as a regular USB drive. If Windows does not recognize the player, shows it with a warning icon, or lists it as an unknown device, the cause is usually the MTP driver or its connection. This guide covers where that driver comes from, how to install or reinstall it on Windows, and what to check when it still fails.

Before you start

On Windows, MTP support is part of the operating system. In most cases there is no separate Sony MTP driver to download: Windows uses its built-in MTP USB Device driver once the player is connected. The installation runs locally on your computer. An internet connection is only needed if Windows has to fetch missing media components or optional driver updates.

  • A data-capable USB cable. Some cables only carry power and will never show the player to the computer.
  • A direct USB port on the computer. Avoid unpowered hubs and front-panel extension ports while troubleshooting.
  • Administrator rights on the Windows account, because driver changes require them.
  • Your Walkman's model number, so you can check its manual or Sony's support page for model-specific connection settings.
  • Your Windows edition. N and KN editions ship without media components, and MTP support depends on them.

On macOS, there is no built-in MTP file browsing. A Windows driver will not help there, so check Sony's support resources for your model to find out which transfer method it supports on a Mac.

Step-by-step instructions

Work through these steps in order and stop as soon as the player appears correctly. Each step can be undone. Reconnecting the player or uninstalling the device in Device Manager returns things to the previous state.

  • 1. Prepare the player. Turn on the Walkman and connect it with the data cable. If your model runs Android, unlock the screen. If a USB notification appears, choose the file transfer option.
  • 2. Check the USB mode on older models. Some non-Android Walkman models have a USB connection mode setting, with choices such as MTP or mass storage. Look in your model's manual, and select MTP if you want to use the MTP driver.
  • 3. Install media components on N editions. On Windows 10 or 11 N/KN, add the Media Feature Pack from the optional features section of Settings, then restart. Without it, MTP devices often fail to install.
  • 4. Open Device Manager. Right-click the Start button and choose Device Manager. Look for the Walkman under Portable Devices, Other devices or Universal Serial Bus devices. A yellow warning mark means the driver did not load correctly.
  • 5. Assign the built-in MTP driver. Right-click the device and choose Update driver, then Browse my computer for drivers, then Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer. Select a portable device or MTP-related category if one is offered, choose MTP USB Device, and confirm.
  • 6. Reinstall the Windows MTP driver file if MTP USB Device is missing. In File Explorer, open the INF folder inside the Windows folder, right-click wpdmtp.inf and choose Install. On Windows 11 you may need Show more options first. Then repeat step 5.
  • 7. Reconnect. Unplug the Walkman, wait a few seconds, and connect it again so Windows loads the driver cleanly.

If you use Sony's transfer software for your model, install it only after the player shows up correctly in Windows. That software depends on the same connection and does not replace the Windows MTP driver.

Check the output

In Device Manager, the Walkman should appear under Portable Devices without a warning mark. In File Explorer, it should be listed under This PC by its model name or as a portable device, and you should be able to open its storage and see its folders.

Keep in mind how MTP differs from a USB drive. The player usually has no drive letter, and some programs cannot open or edit files directly on it. Copy files to the computer first if you need to work with them. A successful copy also does not guarantee playback, because the Walkman can only play formats its model supports. Confirm format support in your model's specifications, and test one file before transferring a whole library.

Common problems and next steps

  • Searching for a Sony Walkman MTP driver download: Windows already provides the MTP driver, so standalone "MTP driver" packages from third-party download sites are unnecessary and can be risky. Get drivers or transfer software only from Sony's official support for your model, or from Windows Update.
  • The device appears as unknown or with error code 10 or 28: assign MTP USB Device as described in step 5, or reinstall wpdmtp.inf first.
  • The player only charges: swap the cable, use another USB port, and make sure an Android-based model is unlocked and set to file transfer.
  • MTP USB Device fails on an N edition of Windows: install the Media Feature Pack, restart, and reconnect.
  • The player connects but shows no folders: unlock the player, disconnect, and connect again. On models with a USB mode setting, confirm that it is set to MTP.
  • Nothing works on one computer: try the Walkman on another computer. This tells you whether the problem lies with the PC's driver setup or with the player and cable.

If the player is still not recognized on any computer with a known-good data cable, contact Sony support with your model number and the exact Device Manager error.
