How to Show Your Twitch Live Status on Discord
Link Twitch to Discord so your profile shows a purple Streaming status when you go live. Includes setup steps, how to check it worked, and common fixes.
The short answer
To show that you are live on Twitch, connect your Twitch account to Discord under Connections in your Discord settings and allow Discord to share your activity. After that, Discord changes your status automatically while your Twitch channel is broadcasting. Your status dot turns purple, and your profile shows a link to the stream. When the broadcast ends, your normal status returns.
The purple Streaming status comes only from a real broadcast on a connected service such as Twitch. There is no official setting that sets it manually. You cannot pick it the way you pick Online, Idle, Do Not Disturb or Invisible, and a custom status message does not produce it.
Two features that are easy to confuse
- Twitch streaming status: the purple status and stream link on your Discord profile. It appears only while you are live on Twitch and your accounts are linked. This guide covers this feature.
- Discord Go Live: Discord's own screen and app sharing inside a voice channel. It shows a red LIVE badge next to your name in that voice channel for people in the server. It does not broadcast to Twitch and does not turn your profile status purple.
- Streamer Mode: a privacy setting that hides personal details on screen while you stream. It does not tell anyone you are live.
Before you start
- A Twitch account you can sign in to, plus a working way to broadcast to it, such as streaming software or a console's built-in Twitch option.
- The Discord desktop app, the web version, or the mobile app, signed in to the account that should show the status.
- Permission to authorize the connection. Discord sends you to a Twitch sign-in and approval screen, so a browser blocking pop-ups or redirects can interrupt this step.
Step-by-step setup
- 1. Open Discord and go to User Settings. On desktop, this is the gear icon near your username. On mobile, tap your profile picture.
- 2. Select Connections.
- 3. Choose Twitch from the list of services.
- 4. Sign in to Twitch if asked, review the access Discord is requesting, and approve it.
- 5. Back in Discord, find Twitch in your list of connected accounts. Make sure any toggles for showing it on your profile or displaying your live status are switched on. The exact labels can differ between app versions.
- 6. Go to the activity privacy settings and turn on the option that shares your current activity as a status. If this is off, Discord won't show what you're doing, and that includes streaming.
- 7. Set your regular status to Online, Idle or Do Not Disturb, not Invisible. Invisible hides your activity from others.
Success check for setup: Twitch appears under Connections with your Twitch username. If it isn't listed, the authorization didn't finish, so repeat steps 3 and 4.
How to confirm it works
- 1. Start a broadcast on your Twitch channel.
- 2. Confirm on Twitch that the channel actually shows as live. Discord reacts to Twitch's live state, not to your streaming software being open.
- 3. Watch your own status dot in Discord. It should turn purple, and your profile should show that you are streaming, with a link to the channel.
- 4. Ask a friend or a second account to view your profile or a member list in a shared server. This tests what other people see, which your own view may not reflect.
- 5. End the broadcast and check that your status returns to normal.
Passing this check shows that Discord can detect your Twitch broadcast and display it. It does not test the stream itself. A purple status says nothing about whether your camera is captured correctly, whether your microphone is audible, or whether viewers get good video quality. Check those separately in your streaming software or on the Twitch stream preview.
The status may not change the instant you go live, because Discord depends on Twitch reporting the broadcast. The supplied information doesn't state a typical delay. If nothing changes after a reasonable wait, use the fixes below.
If the purple status doesn't appear
- Check the right account: make sure the Twitch account linked in Discord is the same one you are broadcasting from.
- Check activity sharing: activity status sharing must be on, both globally and for any server where you changed per-server privacy settings.
- Leave Invisible: switch to Online or another visible status.
- Reconnect Twitch: remove the Twitch connection in Discord, add it again, and approve the authorization.
- Restart Discord: fully close and reopen the app, or refresh the web version, after changing settings.
- Confirm you are actually live: a stream that is only being tested or previewed locally won't trigger the status.
Limitations to know
- The status only reflects a live Twitch broadcast. You can't show it ahead of time or keep it after the stream ends.
- Using Discord's Go Live in a voice channel does not trigger the Twitch status, and going live on Twitch does not start a Discord Go Live session.
- Linking Twitch for your status is separate from server features such as Twitch subscriber roles. Server owners set those up through their own integration settings.
