MY WEBCAM TEST GUIDE

Set up the Intel AVStream camera on Surface Pro 7

Enable the Intel AVStream camera on a Surface Pro 7 and select a Windows microphone so conferencing apps capture both video and speech.

The Intel AVStream Camera on a Surface Pro 7 is the Windows video device for the built-in webcam. Enable it in Device Manager and allow camera access in Privacy settings so apps can use it. Speech is captured by a separate microphone input, so after the camera works you still choose that microphone in Sound settings and in your conferencing app. Device labels vary by Windows build and the installed Surface camera driver; use the enabled imaging device that produces a live preview.

Camera video and speech input

AVStream is Microsoft’s kernel streaming class for capture devices. On Surface Pro 7 it exposes the front camera as a video capture endpoint. Microsoft’s Surface Pro 7 product documentation lists dual far-field Studio Mics as the built-in speech hardware. Those mics appear under Windows sound inputs. Video setup and microphone selection are two steps, and conferencing quality depends on both.

Device | Where you enable it | What it captures
Intel AVStream Camera | Camera privacy and Device Manager | Live video
Built-in Studio Mics | Microphone privacy and Sound input | Speech

Turn on the Intel AVStream camera

Complete these checks in order so Windows can start the camera and apps can open it.

  • Open Settings, then Privacy or Privacy & security, then Camera. Allow camera access for the device and for the desktop apps you use for calls.
  • Open Device Manager. Under Cameras or Imaging devices, confirm an Intel AVStream Camera or Surface camera entry is present and enabled.
  • Open the Camera app and confirm a live picture. That verifies the AVStream video path.

If Windows reports a device error on the camera, install current Surface Pro 7 drivers and firmware from Windows Update or Microsoft’s Surface driver package for this model. Prefer those Surface packages over a generic USB video driver. This article does not include a specific driver version.

Select the microphone for speech

  • Open Settings, then Privacy or Privacy & security, then Microphone. Allow microphone access for the device and for the same conferencing apps.
  • Open Settings, then System, then Sound. Under input, select the Surface microphone or the built-in array Windows lists for this PC.
  • Speak at a normal meeting distance and watch the input meter move. Movement confirms Windows is capturing speech on that endpoint.

An endpoint is the named recording device Windows presents to apps. Keep the built-in Surface microphone selected for on-device speech unless you mean to use a headset or USB microphone.

Set both devices in the conferencing app

In Teams, Zoom, Meet, or a similar app, open device or audio and video settings. Set the camera to the Intel AVStream or Surface camera that previewed correctly. Set the microphone to the same input that moved the Windows meter. Set the speaker as its own choice. Apply the change and return to the meeting. A live camera preview with a silent or wrong microphone usually means only the AVStream device was changed.

If the camera does not appear

  • Confirm camera access is allowed and close other apps that may hold the camera, including the Camera app or another call window.
  • In Device Manager, scan for hardware changes and look under Cameras, Imaging devices, and Sound, video and game controllers.
  • Install current Surface Pro 7 drivers and firmware, then reboot.
  • Re-check Camera and Sound permissions after the update; some driver installs restore default device states.

This brief does not include a verified Device Manager name string for every Surface Pro 7 configuration. Trust the enabled camera device that produces a live preview.

Judge voice quality before a call

  • Confirm the input meter rises when you speak and falls when you stop.
  • Record a short clip in Voice Recorder or use the app’s test call and listen for level, clipping, and keyboard noise.
  • If the voice is thin or distant, raise the input level slightly in Sound settings, keep the top bezel clear, and quiet the room.
  • If Bluetooth earbuds are connected, Windows may switch capture to the headset. Reselect the Surface microphone when you want the studio mics.

This guide does not include measured frequency response, signal-to-noise figures, or a ranked comparison of the Surface mics against headsets.

What remains unverified

No driver version, exact Device Manager label, sample rate, or lab measurement was supplied for this article. If the camera still fails after permissions, a live Camera-app preview, and current Surface drivers, copy the camera status from Device Manager and the selected recording device from Sound settings and take that to Microsoft Surface support or your IT admin.
