MY WEBCAM TEST GUIDE

How to see which Windows apps are using your camera

Find out which apps are using or recently used your webcam in Windows 10 and Windows 11, how to read the camera privacy page, and how to turn off access for apps you don't trust.

The short answer

Windows keeps a per-app record of camera access on its camera privacy page in Settings. In Windows 11, open Settings, choose Privacy & security, then Camera. In Windows 10, open Settings, choose Privacy, then Camera. Apps that are using the camera right now are marked as currently in use, and apps that used it earlier show when they last accessed it. The same page lets you switch camera access off for any app.

This page answers two related questions, which are worth keeping apart. The first is which apps are allowed to use the camera. That is a permission. The second is which apps actually opened the camera and when. That is activity. An app can be allowed without ever using the camera. Neither entry tells you whether the video looked good or whether a call went well.

Check camera activity in Windows 11

  • 1. Open Settings. You can press the Windows key and I together, or right-click the Start button and choose Settings.
  • 2. Select Privacy & security in the left pane.
  • 3. Under App permissions, select Camera.
  • 4. Look for a recent activity section on this page. It lists apps that recently accessed the camera, with timestamps.
  • 5. Scroll down to the list of individual apps. Each entry shows its access switch and, where Windows has a record, a note that it is currently in use or when it was last accessed.
  • 6. Expand the section for desktop apps near the bottom. Traditional programs installed outside the Microsoft Store are listed separately here, often with their file location.

How to tell it worked: open an app that uses the camera, such as the built-in Camera app, and then return to the camera privacy page. That app should now appear as currently in use. After you close it, the entry should change to show a last-accessed time. If you see this change, the page is tracking that app correctly.

Check camera activity in Windows 10

  • 1. Open Settings and select Privacy.
  • 2. In the left pane, under App permissions, select Camera.
  • 3. Scroll to the section for choosing which Microsoft Store apps can access your camera. Each app with a record shows its last access time or a note that it is currently in use.
  • 4. Scroll further to the section for allowing desktop apps to access your camera. It lists traditional programs that have used the camera, with their access times.

Older releases of Windows 10 may not show access times on this page. If you see only the on and off switches, the page can still tell you which apps have permission, but it cannot tell you which ones used the camera. Updating Windows is the usual way to get the activity details.

Quick signs that the camera is on right now

Many webcams, including most built into laptops, have an indicator light that comes on while the camera is capturing. On recent versions of Windows 11, a camera icon may also appear in the notification area of the taskbar while an app is using the camera. Hovering over or selecting that icon can show which app is responsible. These signals tell you something is capturing at this moment. Use the Settings page to find out what it is and what used the camera earlier.

Not every camera has a light, and on some devices the light is controlled by the manufacturer's driver rather than wired directly to the sensor. When the light is off, it suggests the camera is idle, but it does not prove it.

Turn off access for an app you don't recognize or trust

  • 1. On the camera privacy page, find the app and switch its access off. This is easy to undo later.
  • 2. For desktop apps, Windows 11 does not offer a switch for each program. The setting that allows desktop apps to access your camera covers all of them at once. If you turn it off, every traditional program loses camera access, including video-call clients installed outside the Store.
  • 3. To block all apps, turn off the main camera access switch at the top of the page.
  • 4. If you don't recognize a desktop app, note its file location from the list. Then decide whether to uninstall it through Settings, under Apps.

How to tell it worked: open the app you blocked and try to use its camera feature. It should report that it cannot access the camera, or show no video. Its entry on the privacy page should stop showing new access times. If you turned off desktop app access to deal with one program, remember to turn it back on before your next call in an app that needs it.

Limits that can change what you conclude

Browsers appear as one app. If Chrome, Edge or Firefox shows camera use, Windows cannot tell you which website was responsible. Check the browser's own site permission settings for camera access to see which sites are allowed. While a site is using the camera, a camera icon usually appears in the browser's address bar.

Desktop apps are controlled together. Windows lists traditional programs and their access times. In Windows 11, though, it lets you switch them on or off only as a group. To stop one program on its own, you may need to change that program's settings or uninstall it.

The list may be incomplete. Windows records apps that open the camera through its standard camera framework. Software that uses the camera hardware through other routes, such as some manufacturer utilities or drivers, may not appear. Some virtual camera tools insert their own layer between the camera and your apps, and the record may then name the tool instead of the app that actually received the video. If the camera light came on and no app accounts for it, investigate further. A security scan and a review of installed programs are reasonable next steps.

Permission does not mean use, and use does not mean quality. An app appearing on the list shows it opened the camera. It does not show what was recorded, whether anything was saved or uploaded, or how the image looked. To find out what an app does with camera footage, read that app's own privacy settings and documentation.

An organization may control these settings. On a work or school computer, the camera privacy page may say that some settings are managed by your organization. In that case, you may be unable to change access yourself, and the IT administrator is the right person to ask.
