How to Find and Install a Driver for an SDM450 MTP Device

Windows lists your phone or tablet as SDM450 MTP and won't open its files? Learn how to install the correct MTP driver, check the result and fix common errors.

If Windows shows a phone, tablet or camera-equipped Android device as “SDM450 MTP” and you can't browse its photos, videos or recordings, the problem is usually how Windows has matched the device to a driver. A rare missing file is less often the cause. SDM450 refers to the Qualcomm Snapdragon 450 chipset. In Qualcomm naming, MTP can also refer to a reference hardware design. Some devices built on this chipset report that generic name instead of a retail model name, so the label alone doesn't tell you the brand. For file access, the protocol that matters is Media Transfer Protocol (also called MTP), which Android uses to share media with a computer.

Before you start

The whole process runs locally on your computer and the device. Getting file transfer working does not require an online service. The only time you need to download something is if you choose to install a USB driver package from the device maker.

  • A USB cable that carries data, not just power. Some cables are charge-only.
  • The device switched on and unlocked, with its screen awake.
  • Administrator rights on the Windows computer, which you need to change drivers.
  • The current device mode. Normal file transfer, USB debugging (ADB) and service or download modes each use different drivers.
  • The hardware ID, which you can find in Device Manager by opening the device's Properties, selecting the Details tab and choosing Hardware Ids. The VID and PID values identify the vendor and help you find the correct maker driver.

If Device Manager lists the device as Qualcomm HS-USB QDLoader 9008, the device is in Qualcomm's emergency download mode. This is not a file transfer issue, and you should not use flashing tools unless you know exactly what they will do. Driver changes described below can be undone from Device Manager.

Step-by-step instructions

These steps cover Windows, where this device name most often causes trouble. Menu wording can differ slightly between Windows 10 and Windows 11, and between Android versions and device makers.

  • 1. Connect the device with the data cable, preferably directly to a computer port rather than through a hub, then unlock it.
  • 2. On the device, open the USB notification and choose File transfer. Some versions call this Transfer files or MTP. If you leave it on Charging only, Windows will not show any storage.
  • 3. On the computer, open Device Manager. Look for the entry under Portable Devices, Other devices or Universal Serial Bus devices.
  • 4. If the entry appears under Portable Devices without a warning icon, the built-in driver is already working. Go to the next section to check access.
  • 5. If the entry has a yellow warning icon, right-click it and choose Update driver. Select Browse my computer for drivers, then Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer.
  • 6. If a device type list appears, choose Portable Devices or Android Device. Then select MTP USB Device, which is Windows' built-in MTP driver. Confirm and reconnect the device if prompted.
  • 7. If MTP USB Device is not offered, install the USB driver package from the device maker, using the hardware ID to confirm it matches. Avoid generic “SDM450 driver” downloads from unofficial sources, because they may bundle unrelated software. Check the publisher signature before running any installer.
  • 8. To undo a change, open the device's Properties, go to the Driver tab and choose Roll Back Driver. You can also uninstall the device there and reconnect it so Windows detects it again.

USB debugging is only needed for developer tools, not for copying files. To use it, enable Developer options and USB debugging on the device, then accept the authorization prompt that appears when you connect. You also need an ADB driver, either from the maker or the Google USB Driver from the Android SDK. The Google driver works with many devices but is not guaranteed to work with every one.

On other systems the approach is different. macOS does not include built-in MTP support for Android devices, so it needs a third-party MTP app. Linux desktops usually detect MTP devices through their file manager without any driver installation.

Check the output

  • The device appears in File Explorer under This PC, with a storage entry such as internal shared storage.
  • You can open the camera folder, usually DCIM, and other media folders. Folder names vary between devices and apps.
  • You can copy one small file from the device to the computer and open it there.
  • You can copy one small file from the computer back to the device and open it on the device.

MTP has some built-in limits. It transfers whole files rather than mounting the storage as a normal drive, so some programs cannot edit a file directly on the device. Thumbnails or file details may be missing until a file is copied. Long video transfers can fail if the screen locks or the cable moves, so copy large files to the computer before editing them. If a photo or video copies successfully but won't play, the computer may lack the right codec for that format. That is not a driver problem.

Copied files stay on your computer unless other software moves them. Check whether a photo import tool, sync client or cloud backup app on the computer starts automatically when the device connects. Also confirm where it stores files and whether it uploads them.

Common problems and next steps

  • The device only charges: select File transfer again on the device, try another data cable and connect directly to the computer.
  • The device appears as SDM450 MTP but shows no folders: unlock the device, keep the screen on and reselect File transfer. Storage is often hidden while the device is locked.
  • The device has a warning icon or an error such as Code 10: uninstall the device in Device Manager, reconnect it and assign MTP USB Device as described above.
  • The device appears as QDLoader 9008: restart it normally, usually by holding the power button, and reconnect it in File transfer mode.
  • You installed an ADB driver but still can't see files: ADB and MTP are separate. Make sure the device is in File transfer mode and that the portable device entry uses an MTP driver.
  • The MTP USB Device option is missing on a Windows N edition: these editions need the Media Feature Pack for MTP support. Install it from Windows optional features, then try again.

If none of these steps work, test the device on another computer to find out whether the problem is the device or the PC. If it still fails, contact the device maker with the hardware ID and ask for the correct USB driver.
