How to Screen Record WhatsApp With Sound on iPhone
Step-by-step instructions for recording a WhatsApp call or conversation on iPhone, including voice and control options, plus fixes for missing audio.
Before you start
On iPhone, screen recording is a built-in function of iOS. To capture WhatsApp with voice, add Screen Recording to Control Center in Settings > Control Center if it is not already present. The main choice is whether to use the microphone as the capture source for your own voice, while the other participant's voice may be heard through the speaker and picked up by the microphone. This process runs locally on the device and does not require adding a separate recording service to WhatsApp.
Step-by-step instructions
Open Control Center and touch the Screen Recording button or its circle icon, depending on your iOS version. On supported iPhone models, a menu appears before recording starts. Select the microphone icon to turn on audio capture, then choose WhatsApp as the location where the recording will appear or start the recording and open WhatsApp.
For a WhatsApp call, enable speakerphone so the other person's voice is audible to the microphone. Keep the iPhone close enough for the microphone to pick up the speaker output without moving the device unnecessarily. If you want to record a video message or voice note in a chat, open the chat and play the message while recording.
To stop, tap the red status indicator at the top of the screen and confirm stopping. The clip is saved to the Photos app. No extra export step is required for ordinary screen recordings, but longer recordings may need to be trimmed later in Photos.
Check the output
Open the saved clip in Photos and play it with the device volume raised. Confirm that your voice is present and that the other participant's voice is audible. The recording format is typically a video file containing the screen image and one audio track. Expect the audio to be monophonic or limited to the microphone input level rather than a direct internal audio capture.
Because iOS screen recording uses the microphone rather than capturing the call audio internally, background noise may be recorded. The sample rate and bitrate are managed by iOS and cannot be changed directly in the screen recording interface. Audio quality also depends on speaker volume and distance between the speaker and microphone.
Common problems and next steps
If the video has no sound, check that the microphone was enabled before recording. In some iOS versions, pressing and holding the Screen Recording button reveals the microphone control. If the microphone is on but the other person is silent, switch to speakerphone, increase the call volume, and reduce background noise around the iPhone.
If the clip stops immediately, a connected headset or wired device may be interfering with the audio path. Disconnect unnecessary input and output devices and try again. Also confirm that the iPhone has enough free storage for the recording format and frame rate that iOS chooses.
When the screen recording does not appear in Photos, check Recently Deleted or wait briefly for encoding to finish. Do not assume that WhatsApp separately stores the recording; screen recordings are handled entirely by iOS and the Photos app.
