How to Screen Record Messenger on iPhone

Step-by-step instructions for recording a Messenger video call or chat on iPhone, including audio settings, quality limits, and common fixes.

Before you start

Screen recording runs locally through the iPhone Control Center; it does not require a separate recording service or the Messenger app to provide a capture option. The recording can include microphone audio depending on what you allow, while audio coming from the other participant depends on the call and system audio handling on your iOS version. Check that Screen Recording is available in Control Center before the call begins, and let the other person know if your region or the call context requires consent.

Step-by-step instructions

First, add the screen recording control if it is not already visible. Open Settings, choose Control Center, and add Screen Recording to the included controls. This keeps the capture command available without leaving the Messenger call.

Start or join the Messenger video call and arrange the view you want to capture. Open Control Center, then touch and hold the Screen Recording button to reveal the audio setting. To include your voice, tap the Microphone Audio button so that it shows as enabled.

Tap Start Recording and return to the call. A red indicator appears in the status bar or Dynamic Island while capture is active. When you are finished, open Control Center again and tap the red recording button, or tap the red indicator and confirm that you want to stop.

The completed file is saved to the Photos app. This makes it simple to trim, share, or delete the recording later.

Check the output

Open Photos and play the saved clip. Check that the Messenger interface and participant video are visible as expected, and that your microphone track is present only if you enabled Microphone Audio.

The output is delivered as a screen recording format in the Photos library rather than a separately selected recording format. Quality is influenced by the capture source, frame rate available to the system, and the encoding used by iOS; exact bitrate is not shown as a user setting. If the file looks different from the live call, consider that compression may reduce fine movement or text sharpness.

Common problems and next steps

If the recording has no sound from the other person, this may be because the call audio is not captured by the current screen recording path on your iOS version. Enable Microphone Audio when you want to record your side of the conversation, but do not assume this will capture incoming call audio.

For a recording that contains no video or audio, check that Do Not Disturb or another Focus mode is not interfering with the call, then confirm that Screen Recording was started after the Messenger call became active.

If the recording is unexpectedly short or missing, verify available iPhone storage and repeat the capture with fewer background tasks running. For strict privacy handling, move or delete the clip from Photos as soon as it is no longer needed, and confirm your local legal requirements before sharing a recording of another person.
