How to Download and Install a Samsung MTP Driver
Get your Samsung phone recognized on Windows 11, 10 or 7: enable file transfer mode, install the MTP driver manually or with Samsung's USB driver package.
MTP (Media Transfer Protocol) is how a Samsung Galaxy phone shares photos, videos, audio recordings and other files with a Windows PC over USB. When the driver is missing or the wrong one is loaded, the phone charges but never shows up in File Explorer. This guide covers how to get a working MTP driver for a Samsung device on Windows 11, Windows 10 and Windows 7, both automatically and by manual installation.
Before you start
The whole process runs locally on your PC. File transfer over MTP happens directly through the USB cable and does not need an online service or account. An internet connection is only needed if you choose to download Samsung's USB driver package or Windows needs to fetch a driver through Windows Update.
Check these points first:
- A USB cable that supports data, not just charging. Charge-only cables are a very common reason a phone is never detected. The cable that came with the phone is the safest choice.
- A USB port directly on the computer rather than a hub, front-panel port or monitor port, at least while setting things up.
- The phone unlocked with its screen on. Galaxy phones do not expose storage to the PC while locked.
- Administrator rights on the PC, since installing or changing a driver requires them.
- On Windows N editions (sold mainly in Europe) and KN editions, the Media Feature Pack, which supplies the media components that MTP depends on. Without it, no Samsung driver package will make the phone appear as a portable device.
Windows 10 and Windows 11 already include a generic MTP driver, and Windows 7 does too in most editions. In many cases the fix is to make Windows use that built-in driver rather than downloading anything.
Step-by-step instructions
1. Set the phone to file transfer mode
Connect the phone and unlock it. If a prompt asks whether to allow access to phone data, tap Allow. Then open the notification panel, tap the USB notification and choose the file transfer option. The exact wording differs between One UI and Android versions, and older models such as the Galaxy S5 may show it as a media device (MTP) option instead. If the phone is set to charging only, Windows will not load an MTP driver at all.
2. Let Windows detect the device
Give Windows up to a minute to set the device up. On Windows 10 and 11 this usually finishes without any action, and the phone appears under This PC in File Explorer. If it does, you already have a working MTP driver and can skip to checking the output.
3. Inspect the device in Device Manager
Right-click the Start button (on Windows 7, open the Start menu and search for it) and open Device Manager. Look for the phone under Portable Devices. If it appears there without a warning icon, the driver is installed. If it appears under Other devices, or has a yellow warning icon, the driver is missing or failed, and you can continue with a manual install.
4. Install the MTP driver manually
This method uses the driver that ships with Windows and is easy to undo:
- Right-click the phone entry in Device Manager and choose Update driver (Update Driver Software on Windows 7).
- Choose Browse my computer for drivers, then Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer.
- If a device type list appears, choose Portable Devices. Clear Show compatible hardware if no suitable entry is listed.
- Select MTP USB Device (it may be listed under a Standard MTP Device manufacturer heading) and confirm.
- Unplug the phone, plug it back in, unlock it and check that file transfer mode is still selected.
5. Install Samsung's USB driver package if the generic driver fails
Samsung publishes a USB driver package for its mobile phones, and installing Samsung Smart Switch for Windows also installs Samsung's device drivers. Download either one only from Samsung's official website, not from third-party driver collections, which may bundle outdated or unwanted software. Before installing, read the supported Windows versions listed for the current release. Older Windows versions, including Windows 7, may only be covered by earlier releases, so confirm compatibility rather than assuming it.
Close any phone-management programs, run the installer as administrator, finish the setup, then restart the PC and reconnect the phone. The 32-bit versus 64-bit question mostly matters for Windows 7 64-bit and Windows 11 64-bit users searching for a separate download. Check whether the package lists your system type as supported rather than looking for an unofficial 64-bit-only file.
How to reverse the changes
If a driver makes things worse, open Device Manager, right-click the phone, open Properties and use Roll Back Driver on the Driver tab when that option is available. Samsung's driver package and Smart Switch can be removed like any other program from the installed apps list in Windows Settings or Control Panel.
Check the output
A working connection shows the phone by name under This PC in File Explorer, with its internal storage (and a memory card, if one is fitted) inside. To confirm, copy one photo or recording from the phone to the PC and open the copy. Then copy a small file back to the phone and check that it appears on the device.
Keep in mind how MTP differs from a USB flash drive. The phone does not get a drive letter, and files are transferred as whole files instead of being edited in place. Some editing and media programs cannot open or save files directly on the phone, so copy camera footage or audio to the PC first and work on the local copy. Folders with very many files can take a while to list, and the phone must stay unlocked and connected while copying.
Copying over MTP does not encrypt, back up or delete anything by itself. Verify that important photos and recordings arrived intact before you remove them from the phone, and remember that copies on the PC follow that computer's own access and backup settings.
Common problems and next steps
The phone only charges and never appears
Try a different data-capable cable and a different USB port first, then reselect file transfer mode on the phone. Restarting both the phone and the PC clears many stuck connections. If Device Manager shows no new entry at all when you plug in the phone, the issue is usually the cable, the port or the phone's connector, not the driver.
MTP USB Device shows an error on Windows 10 or 11
Uninstall the device in Device Manager, unplug the phone and reconnect it so Windows can set it up again. Running Windows Update can also deliver a fresh driver. If the error remains, install Samsung's USB driver package as described above. On an N edition, confirm the Media Feature Pack is installed, because MTP will not work without it.
Windows 7 does not recognize a newer Galaxy phone
Windows 7 no longer receives updates from Microsoft, and newer drivers and phones may not be tested against it. Use the manual MTP USB Device method first, then check whether a Samsung driver release that lists Windows 7 support is available. If neither works, transferring files through a newer Windows PC or a memory card reader is the more dependable option.
Galaxy S5 and other older models
Older phones such as the Galaxy S5 use the same MTP setup. The S5 has a USB 3.0 micro-B port that also accepts a standard micro USB cable, so a cable that fits is not necessarily the problem. Check the USB connection setting on the phone, which on older Android versions may be found in the notification panel or the storage settings.
Files are visible but copying fails or stalls
Keep the screen unlocked, avoid hubs and extension cables, and copy smaller batches of files. Check that the destination drive has enough free space. If a single file repeatedly fails, try opening it on the phone to confirm it is not damaged.
