How to Restore a Missing OBS Audio Mixer Panel

Step-by-step instructions for restoring a missing OBS audio mixer panel, reopening its dock, checking menu settings, and fixing common audio source problems.

Before you start

This guide applies to OBS Studio running locally on your computer. An audio mixer panel disappears after a window or dock change, but restoring it does not require an online account or external service. Close any active recording or stream first so the window layout can be changed safely.

A missing audio mixer usually means the panel was hidden, undocked, or moved outside the visible window area. It does not mean your audio source was deleted. Keep your current scene collection intact while you check the view and dock settings.

Step-by-step instructions

Reopen the Audio Mixer dock

  • In the OBS Studio menu bar, select View.
  • Point to Docks.
  • Select Audio Mixer. A check mark appears when the panel is visible.
  • If the panel opens as a floating window, drag it by its title bar to the bottom area of the main OBS window until a blue dock outline appears, then release it.

Reset the window layout if needed

If the Audio Mixer option is already checked but you still cannot see the panel, the dock may be off-screen or collapsed. Some OBS versions include a layout reset option. Where available, you can reset the user interface to its default layout, but be aware that this may also return other panels to their original positions.

Add an audio source so the mixer has an entry

The Audio Mixer shows sources that OBS can control. If it appears empty, add or verify a capture source. In the Sources area, select the plus sign, choose an input device such as Audio Input Capture or Video Capture Device with audio, and confirm the device. The mixer should then show an input level for that source.

A source that is muted or set to a very low input level can make the meter appear static, but it is still present in the mixer. Check the speaker icon and the slider beside the source name before assuming the panel has failed.

Check the output

Speak into the microphone or play audio through the selected device while watching the mixer. The colored level meter should move when the input device receives sound. The panel should remain visible when you switch between scenes and when you restart OBS.

The meter position is only a visual guide. It does not change the recording format, encoding setting, or bitrate. Confirm those values separately in the output settings if you are preparing a recording.

Common problems and next steps

If OBS keeps losing the panel after a restart, check whether the application can save its window layout to its configuration folder. An operating-system permission or a read-only configuration file can prevent the dock layout from being retained, although the panel can still be reopened manually.

If the mixer is visible but audio is missing, confirm that the correct input device is selected in the source properties. In a call or video capture setup, audio may arrive through one source while the mixer displays another. Select the expected device and test again rather than creating duplicate sources.

If background noise makes the meter hard to read, lower the source input level in the mixer first. Additional noise suppression settings may be available in filters, but the mixer slider is the most direct place to reduce a hot input. For a quiet source, raise the input level gradually and recheck the meter.
