Resize JPG and JPEG Photos Online

Step-by-step instructions for resizing JPG and JPEG photos online: set pixel dimensions, keep aspect ratio, and check the result.

Before you start

You need the JPG or JPEG file you want to resize and a browser. Most online JPEG photo resizers run entirely in the browser, but some tools may upload the image to a server. Check the tool's privacy or help page before using a confidential photo. If you need a transparent background, use PNG rather than JPEG; the JPEG file format does not preserve transparency.

Step-by-step instructions

The exact controls vary between websites, but the basic sequence is similar in most online image resizer JPG tools.

  • 1. Open the resizer website in your browser.
  • 2. Select or drag in the JPG image you want to change.
  • 3. Choose how to enter the new size: by pixel dimensions, percentage, or a preset.
  • 4. If the tool has a lock or link option for aspect ratio, keep it enabled to avoid stretching the photo.
  • 5. Enter the width or height. When the aspect ratio is locked, the other value updates automatically.
  • 6. If available, use the crop tool before resizing to remove parts of the image and change the framing without distortion.
  • 7. Apply the resize and choose JPG or JPEG as the output file format if the tool offers a choice.
  • 8. Select the quality or compression level if shown. Lower quality creates a smaller file but can add visible artifacts.
  • 9. Download the resized copy. Keep the original file until you have checked the result.

Check the output

Open the downloaded image and confirm the width and height match the values you set. Zoom in around edges, text, and areas of fine detail to check for blur or compression artifacts. The new file should still open correctly in an image viewer or browser. Keep the untouched original as a backup, because resaving a JPEG can discard some visual information.

Common problems and next steps

  • Distorted photo: the aspect ratio was not locked, or width and height were changed independently. Undo the change and enable the ratio lock before entering new pixel dimensions.
  • Blurry result: the image was made much larger than the source. Enlarging a photo beyond its original pixel dimensions does not create real detail.
  • Wrong file type: the tool may have exported a different file format. Download again and select JPG or JPEG explicitly.
  • Large file size: reduce the output dimensions or choose a lower quality level. Re-export as JPEG and compare the quality before replacing the original.
  • Privacy concern: if the service requires an account or sends files to a server, use a local or clearly browser-based tool for sensitive images.
