How to Remove Your WhatsApp Video Call Background
Turn off a WhatsApp video call background or filter and get your normal camera view back, plus how to find effects added by your phone or computer.
If your WhatsApp video calls show a blurred, replaced or filtered background, you can usually return to a normal view by turning off the effect during a call. If the background still isn't normal after that, the effect may come from your phone or computer rather than from WhatsApp. This guide covers both cases.
Before you start
- Update WhatsApp. Call effects and backgrounds have reached users gradually, so icons, labels and availability can differ by app version, device and region.
- Make sure WhatsApp has camera permission. Without it, you won't get a live preview and can't see whether an effect is active.
- Work out what kind of change you are seeing. A background effect blurs or replaces what is behind you. A filter changes the colours or look of the whole image. Brightness or smoothing adjustments can also change how the scene looks. Each of these may need to be turned off separately.
- Only you can change your own background. You can't remove the background another person has chosen; they have to turn it off on their device.
Turning off an effect is reversible: you can switch it back on during any later call. This guide doesn't assume whether WhatsApp processes background effects on your device or on its servers. If that matters to you, check WhatsApp's own help and privacy documentation for your app version.
Step-by-step instructions
On Android or iPhone
- Start or join a video call and make sure your camera is on.
- If the call controls are hidden, tap the screen or your own video tile to show them.
- Find the effects control. In versions that have it, it often appears as a wand or sparkle icon near your self-view. The exact icon and its position can vary.
- Open the backgrounds section. Where filters and backgrounds are offered together, they are usually shown as separate groups.
- Choose the option that removes the background effect. It is typically labelled None or shown as a crossed-out circle, often at the start of the list.
- If a filter or other adjustment is also active, switch it off the same way in its own section.
- Close the effects panel and check your self-view.
Some versions also let you open effects from the camera preview before the call connects. The same approach applies there. Don't assume your choice is saved for future calls; check the effects panel again at the start of your next call.
On a computer
If your WhatsApp desktop app shows an effects control in the call window, turn off the background the same way as on a phone. If there is no effects control but your background is still blurred or replaced, the effect probably comes from somewhere else:
- Operating system camera effects, such as background blur in Windows Studio Effects on supported PCs, or the video effects in Control Center on macOS. Turn these off while your camera is in use.
- A virtual camera or webcam utility selected as the capture source. In WhatsApp's call or video settings, change the selected camera to your physical webcam. You can also turn off the effect in that utility.
Check the output
Look at your self-view. With the effect off, the edges around your hair and shoulders should look natural, and the room behind you should be in focus rather than blurred or replaced. Your self-view is only a local preview, so ask the other person to confirm what they see.
Without an effect, image quality depends on your camera, lighting and connection. Video calls usually adjust resolution and frame rate to the network, so a soft or choppy picture on a weak connection doesn't mean an effect is still on. A self-view that looks mirrored is also normal and isn't caused by a background effect.
Common problems and next steps
- No effects icon: your app version or device may not support call effects yet. Update WhatsApp and check again. If effects were never available to you, any blur you see comes from your device, not from WhatsApp.
- The background comes back on the next call: open the effects panel at the start of each call and select None again until the setting stays off.
- Still blurred with WhatsApp effects off on a phone: some phones add their own effects to video calls. On some iPhones, the Portrait option under Video Effects in Control Center can blur the background in supported apps. Some Android phones, including certain Samsung Galaxy models, have video call effects in their system settings. Turn these off.
- The picture looks dark or grainy after you remove the effect: improve your lighting. Put a light source in front of you rather than behind you, and clean the camera lens.
- The wrong camera is active: switch between the front and rear cameras during the call. On a computer, choose the correct selected camera in WhatsApp's settings.
- No video at all: check camera permission for WhatsApp in your phone or computer's privacy settings. Close any other app that might be using the camera, then rejoin the call.
