How to Remove Your WhatsApp Video Call Background on Samsung

Turn off a virtual or blurred background in a WhatsApp video call on a Samsung Galaxy phone, whether it comes from WhatsApp effects or Samsung's video call effects.

If a blurred or virtual background keeps showing up in your WhatsApp video calls on a Samsung phone, it can come from one of two places: WhatsApp's own in-call effects, or Samsung's system-level video call effects on Galaxy devices. Each one is switched off in a different place, so first work out which one is active.

Before you start

  • Update WhatsApp from the Galaxy Store or Google Play. In-call effects are only available in newer versions, and older versions may not show the controls described here.
  • Check that WhatsApp has camera permission. Without it, no camera feed or background controls appear.
  • Note which camera is selected. Effects are usually applied to the front camera, so switch to it before you check.
  • Accept that menu names vary. Labels and locations differ between One UI versions, phone models and WhatsApp releases, so look for similar wording if yours does not match exactly.

Whether the background effect is processed on your phone or by an online service depends on the feature and your software version. Neither WhatsApp nor Samsung guarantees one or the other here. If this matters to you, check the current privacy information for WhatsApp and for your Samsung device.

Step-by-step instructions

Option 1: Turn off WhatsApp's in-call effect

  • Start or join a WhatsApp video call.
  • Tap the screen to show the call controls.
  • Tap the effects icon. On recent versions it sits near your self-view or among the call controls and is usually a wand or sparkle symbol.
  • Open the background section and choose the option with no effect, usually labeled None or shown as an empty circle.
  • If a filter or touch-up is also on, set it to none in the same panel.
  • Close the panel and look at your self-view to confirm your real surroundings are visible.

If you don't see an effects icon at all, WhatsApp is not applying the background. The effect is probably coming from Samsung, so go to Option 2.

Option 2: Turn off Samsung video call effects

Many Galaxy phones running One UI have a system feature called Video call effects. It can add a blur, color or image background in supported apps, including WhatsApp, and it stays on across calls until you turn it off.

  • During a WhatsApp video call, look for a small floating video call effects button on the screen. If it is there, tap it and choose the off or no-background option.
  • To turn it off for all calls, open the Settings app and look for Video call effects. On many models it is under Advanced features. Use the search bar in Settings if you can't find it.
  • Switch Video call effects off. Or keep it on and change only the background option to none, if your version offers that.
  • If you don't see the setting, your model or One UI version may not support it. In that case, the background is coming from WhatsApp.

Both options are reversible. You can turn the same effect back on at any time from the same panel or setting.

Check the output

Your self-view during the call is the quickest check. If it shows your actual surroundings with clean edges around your head and shoulders, the effect is off. Because what you see and what the other person receives can differ slightly, ask the person you are calling to confirm too.

Once the effect is off, how your background looks depends on the camera and the connection. Resolution, frame rate and compression are set by WhatsApp and your network, not by these settings. Poor lighting can make the real background look grainy, which is unrelated to effects.

Common problems and next steps

The background comes back on the next call: this usually means Samsung video call effects is still enabled in Settings. Switching it off only from the floating in-call button may not change the saved setting, so turn it off in Settings as well.

There's no effects icon or floating button: update WhatsApp and your phone software, then restart the call. If neither control appears after updating, that feature may not be available for your device, region or app version.

The background is gone, but edges or your hair still look odd: some effect is probably still applied. Check both the WhatsApp effects panel and the Samsung setting, because both can be active at the same time.

You want to hide your real room instead: don't remove the effect. Choose a blur or background option in either feature. Even, front-facing lighting usually helps the edge detection follow your outline more accurately.
