How to Remove a Photo Background in Canva
Remove a photo background in Canva with BG Remover: plan requirements, step-by-step instructions, transparent PNG export and fixes for common problems.
Canva's background remover isolates the main subject of a photo, such as a person, product or pet, and deletes everything behind it. This guide covers the browser and app workflow, how to keep transparency when you export, and what to do when the result looks wrong.
Before you start
- Check your plan. Background removal for photos is generally a paid Canva feature, available on Pro and some organization plans such as Teams, Education or Nonprofit. If you don't see the tool, confirm your current plan in your account settings.
- Know where processing happens. Canva is an online service. Your photo is uploaded to your Canva account, and the removal is processed by Canva, not only on your device. Before uploading anything sensitive, check Canva's current privacy terms and your organization's rules.
- Use a suitable source photo. A subject with clear edges against a contrasting background gives the cleanest cutout. Busy backgrounds, motion blur and subjects that match the background color are harder to separate.
- Keep the original file. Background removal changes the image inside your design, so keep an untouched copy of the photo on your device or in a separate folder.
- Check the file. Canva limits upload size and accepts only certain image formats. If an upload fails, check Canva's help pages for the current limits.
Step-by-step instructions
- Open or create a design. If you only need the cutout, choose custom dimensions close to the photo's aspect ratio so the export has little empty space around the subject.
- Upload the photo through the Uploads panel, or drag the file onto the editor, then add it to the page.
- To keep the edit reversible, duplicate the photo or the page first. You can then compare the two versions or go back to the original.
- Select the photo. In the toolbar, open Edit (labeled Edit photo or Edit image in some versions).
- Choose BG Remover. Canva processes the image, which can take a few seconds, and shows the subject without its background.
- Refine the result if needed. Use the Erase brush to remove leftover background and the Restore brush to bring back parts of the subject that were cut off. Adjust the brush size for fine areas such as hair or fingers.
- If you don't like the result, use Undo, or delete the edited copy and work from your duplicate.
- In the mobile app, the steps are similar: tap the photo, tap Edit and choose BG Remover. Button positions differ between the app and the browser editor, and they can change between versions.
Check the output
Before exporting, zoom in on the edges. Temporarily set the page background to a strong contrasting color, so halos, leftover background and missing pieces of the subject are easier to spot. Pay special attention to hair, glasses, transparent objects and areas where the subject touches the background.
To keep transparency, open Share, then Download, and pick PNG as the file format. Then turn on the transparent background option, which is also a paid feature. JPG does not support transparency, so the removed area becomes a solid fill in that format. If a compression option is offered for PNG, leave it off when edge quality matters, because it can reduce image quality.
Check the downloaded file's pixel dimensions in your device's file info or an image viewer. Canva exports the whole page, so the design size and any size multiplier offered at download set the output resolution. Removing the background doesn't add detail: a small or blurry original stays small or blurry.
Finally, open the PNG in the app where you'll use it, such as a slide deck, a video tool or a webpage editor, and confirm that it shows transparency there, not a white or black box.
Common problems and next steps
- BG Remover is missing or locked. Check that you're signed in to an account whose plan includes it, and that you selected an actual photo. Graphics, frames, grids and some elements don't offer the tool. Locked elements need to be unlocked first.
- Parts of the subject disappeared. Use the Restore brush with a smaller size. If large areas are missing, try a photo with better lighting or more contrast between the subject and the background.
- Background traces remain around the edges. Erase them with a small brush at high zoom. Fine hair and soft shadows rarely separate perfectly, so check the result at the size you'll actually use.
- The download still has a background. Make sure you chose PNG, turned on the transparent background option and didn't place a colored shape or image behind the subject on the page.
- The exported image has too much empty space or the wrong shape. Resize the design to fit the subject, or position the subject and match the page's aspect ratio to where you'll use it, then download again.
- The cutout looks soft or pixelated. Start from a higher-resolution original, export at a larger size if your plan offers it, and avoid enlarging the subject far beyond its original size in the design.
- You're working with sensitive images. Delete the upload and the design from your Canva account when you're done, and confirm in Canva's own documentation what deletion covers.
