How to Remove an Image Background in PowerPoint
Use PowerPoint's Remove Background or Set Transparent Color to cut out a picture's background, including in PowerPoint 2016, and keep the transparency on export.
PowerPoint can remove a picture's background without a separate image editor. Select the picture, open the Picture Format tab, and choose Remove Background. PowerPoint guesses which parts are background and marks them for removal. You then refine that selection and keep the changes. If the background is one solid color, Set Transparent Color is a quicker alternative. Both tools work on photos and other raster images. Results depend on how clearly the subject stands out from its background.
The short answer
- Select the picture on the slide.
- Open the Picture Format tab. In PowerPoint 2016 and some older versions, this tab appears under Picture Tools as Format.
- Click Remove Background, at the left end of the ribbon in the Adjust group.
- Review the magenta overlay, which shows the areas PowerPoint will remove.
- Use Mark Areas to Keep and Mark Areas to Remove to correct the selection.
- Click Keep Changes. To start over, click Discard All Changes.
Refining the selection
The automatic detection works best when the subject has clear edges and contrasts with its surroundings. Hair, fur, glass, shadows, and backgrounds close in color to the subject often need manual correction. After you click Mark Areas to Keep or Mark Areas to Remove, mark the region that PowerPoint misjudged. PowerPoint then recalculates the selection. Repeat until the magenta overlay covers only what you want gone.
The marking method depends on the version. In PowerPoint 2016 and earlier, you click or draw short lines to mark areas. A rectangular marquee with handles also sets the region PowerPoint considers, so enlarge it if part of your subject falls outside it. Newer Microsoft 365 versions drop the marquee and let you draw freeform strokes with a pencil-style tool. The exact behavior may differ between builds and between Windows and Mac.
Making a solid-color background transparent
For a logo or graphic on a plain white or single-color background, Set Transparent Color is often faster. It is also available in PowerPoint 2016.
- Select the picture.
- On the Picture Format tab, open Color.
- Choose Set Transparent Color.
- Click the background color in the picture. Every pixel of that exact color becomes transparent.
This tool makes only one color transparent at a time. That color is removed everywhere in the image, including inside the subject. It handles gradients, noise, and JPEG compression artifacts poorly, and these can leave a speckled fringe. In those cases, use Remove Background instead.
Which method to use
| Method | Best for | Main limitation |
| Remove Background | Photos and subjects on varied or detailed backgrounds | May need manual marking around fine edges |
| Set Transparent Color | Logos and graphics on one flat color | Affects only one exact color, everywhere in the image |
| Picture Transparency (newer Microsoft 365 versions) | Fading an entire image | Changes the whole picture's opacity, not just the background |
Removing the background and making the whole picture transparent are separate tasks. The Transparency control on the Picture Format tab makes the entire image see-through, subject included. PowerPoint 2016 has no such control for pictures. The usual workaround there is to fill a shape with the picture and adjust the fill transparency.
Keeping the transparency outside PowerPoint
To reuse the cut-out image elsewhere, right-click it and choose Save as Picture, then save it as PNG. PNG keeps transparent areas. JPEG does not support transparency, so removed areas are usually filled with a solid color in that format.
When the option is unavailable
- Make sure a picture, not a shape or text box, is selected. Otherwise the Picture Format tab will not appear.
- Remove Background is generally unavailable for vector graphics such as SVG icons. It is designed for raster images like JPEG and PNG.
- Feature availability differs among desktop PowerPoint for Windows, PowerPoint for Mac, and PowerPoint for the web. Check the ribbon in your own version rather than relying on a single menu path.
What this does not change
Removing a background from a still image in a slide only edits that picture. It is not the live background replacement that webcam software and video-conferencing apps apply to your camera feed. Neither feature affects which microphone is selected or how speech is captured. Webcam audio is configured separately, in your operating system's sound settings and in the conferencing app.
Evidence gaps
No version-specific documentation or test results were supplied for this guide. The steps above reflect PowerPoint's long-standing, publicly documented picture tools. Ribbon labels, the marking interface, and web-version availability can change between Microsoft 365 updates. If a menu item is missing or named differently, check PowerPoint's built-in help for your version.
