How to Remove the Background From an Image in DaVinci Resolve
A practical guide to removing the background from a still image in DaVinci Resolve using Magic Mask, qualifiers, Power Windows or Fusion keyers, then exporting with transparency.
The short answer
You can remove the background from a still image in DaVinci Resolve, but it works the way the program treats video. Place the image on a timeline, isolate the subject with a mask or key, send that selection to an alpha (transparency) output, and then either place a new background underneath or export in a format that keeps transparency.
Two conditions limit how easy this is. First, the cleanest results come from images with a plain or evenly colored background. Busy scenes and fine edges such as hair usually need more manual refinement. Second, the AI-based Magic Mask tool has historically been tied to the paid Studio edition. If you use the free version, plan to rely on qualifiers, Power Windows or Fusion keyers, and confirm what your installed version includes.
Choosing a method
| Method | Where it lives | Best suited to | Main limitation |
| Magic Mask | Color page | Subjects such as people or objects against varied backgrounds | Edition and version dependent; edges may need cleanup |
| Qualifier (HSL or 3D) | Color page | Backgrounds of a fairly uniform color, including green or blue screens | Struggles when subject and background share colors |
| Power Window | Color page | Simple shapes or rough isolation | Manual drawing; poor fit for detailed outlines |
| Delta Keyer or other Fusion keyers, plus polygon masks | Fusion page | Precise keying and compositing control | Steeper learning curve, node-based workflow |
General workflow on the Color page
Exact menu names and button placements can differ between Resolve versions, so treat the following as the general sequence rather than a fixed menu path.
- 1. Import the image into the Media Pool and drag it onto a timeline. A still image becomes a clip with a default duration, which you can lengthen or shorten.
- 2. Open the Color page and select the clip.
- 3. In a serial node, create the selection: use Magic Mask to mark the subject, a qualifier to sample the background color, or a Power Window to draw around the subject.
- 4. If you selected the background instead of the subject, invert the selection so the subject is the part you keep.
- 5. Refine the matte with the available edge controls, such as blur, shrink or grow, and noise cleanup, while viewing the matte in highlight mode to spot gaps.
- 6. Right-click in the node editor and add an alpha output, then connect the key output of your masking node to it. The background should now become transparent.
- 7. Back on the Edit page, place a new background image or color on the track beneath the clip, or leave it empty if you plan to export with transparency.
A visible check: once the alpha output is connected, the background area should appear black or show the track underneath in the viewer, while the subject stays intact. If parts of the subject disappear or background patches remain, return to the masking node and adjust the selection before moving on.
Using the Fusion page instead
Fusion offers more precise control. A common approach is to add a keyer such as the Delta Keyer between the media input and media output for screen-colored backgrounds, or to draw a polygon mask around the subject and apply it to the image. Fusion passes transparency through its node chain, so the result can be composited over another background directly in Fusion or on the Edit page.
Exporting an image with a transparent background
Removing the background in the viewer does not guarantee a transparent file. On the Deliver page, choose a format and codec that support an alpha channel, such as an image format like PNG or TIFF or a video codec like ProRes 4444, and enable the option to export alpha. Formats without alpha support will fill the empty area with black. Set the render range to a single frame if you only want one still image. Available formats can depend on your operating system and Resolve edition, so check the options shown in your copy.
What this means for webcam audio
Removing a background from a still image is a purely visual task and has no effect on microphone input, speech capture or call audio. DaVinci Resolve is post-production software, not a live virtual camera, so this technique does not replace the background in a live video call. Live background replacement for conferencing is handled by webcam software, virtual camera tools or the conferencing app itself, and audio input selection stays a separate setting in those tools.
Evidence gaps
No version-specific documentation, measurements or test results were supplied for this guide. The workflow above reflects generally documented Resolve features. Confirm exact menu paths, Magic Mask availability and export options against the release notes or manual for the version you have installed.
