How to Remove a Background in DaVinci Resolve Free
Remove or make a background transparent in the free version of DaVinci Resolve: chroma keying, Fusion keyers, masking without a green screen and alpha export.
The short answer
You can remove a background in the free version of DaVinci Resolve, but the easiest route depends on how the footage was shot. If the subject is in front of an evenly lit green or blue screen, the free tools work well: use the Qualifier on the Color page or a keyer in Fusion. If there is no green screen, the free version has no one-click option. Magic Mask, the AI subject-isolation tool, has been a Studio-only (paid) feature in recent releases. Without it, you have to mask the subject manually with shapes and tracking, which takes much longer.
Getting a transparent background is a separate step. A key only hides the background inside your project. To get a file with real transparency, you need to export to a format that stores an alpha channel. An alpha channel is per-pixel transparency data. Common MP4 and H.264 exports don't support it.
A note on accuracy: no version-specific testing data was supplied for this guide. The menu names below describe long-standing workflows, but labels and feature availability can change between releases. Check them against the version you have installed. If a tool shows a Studio badge or adds a watermark to your render, it isn't available in the free version.
Method 1: Key a green screen on the Color page
This method uses the Qualifier, which selects pixels by hue, saturation and luminance. You then send that selection to the clip's alpha output.
- 1. On the Edit page, place the green-screen clip on a video track. Put the replacement background, if you're using one, on the track directly below it.
- 2. Select the green-screen clip and open the Color page.
- 3. Right-click an empty area of the Node Editor and choose Add Alpha Output. A blue connector appears on the right side of the node graph.
- 4. Open the Qualifier panel, choose the eyedropper and drag across the green background. Turn on the highlight view to see what is selected.
- 5. Invert the qualifier so that the subject is selected instead of the background.
- 6. Connect the node's key output (the blue triangle) to the Alpha Output connector.
- 7. Refine the edge in the qualifier's matte finesse controls. Clean Black and Clean White remove speckles and holes, and small amounts of Blur Radius or shrink and grow settings soften a hard or fringed edge.
- 8. Return to the Edit page. The background track should now show through wherever the green was.
Check the result: switch the highlight view to black-and-white matte mode. The subject should be solid white and the background solid black. Grey patches in the subject will turn semi-transparent. Grey noise in the background will show up as visible haze.
Method 2: Use the Delta Keyer in Fusion
Fusion is DaVinci Resolve's node-based compositing page, and it's included in the free version. Its Delta Keyer is a dedicated chroma keyer with finer edge controls than the Qualifier.
- 1. Select the clip on the timeline and open the Fusion page.
- 2. Add a Delta Keyer node between MediaIn1 and MediaOut1.
- 3. In the Delta Keyer's inspector, use the Background Color eyedropper to sample the green screen close to the subject.
- 4. Switch the view to the alpha channel or the final matte to check the key.
- 5. In the Matte tab, raise the clean foreground and clean background controls just enough to remove holes and grey haze.
- 6. If you want a background inside Fusion, add a Merge node. Connect the keyed footage to the Merge foreground input and the background image or clip to the background input. Then send the Merge output to MediaOut1. If you only want transparency, connect the Delta Keyer straight to MediaOut1.
Fusion also includes an Ultra Keyer, and the Color page has a 3D Keyer. All of these do the same basic job. Use whichever gives the cleanest edge on your footage.
Method 3: Remove a background without a green screen
Without a solid-colour backdrop, a keyer has nothing to select. In the free version, you'll have to isolate the subject manually:
- Color page Power Windows: draw a curve window around the subject, use the tracker to follow its movement, and connect that node's key to the Alpha Output as in Method 1. This works for subjects that don't move much, like a person sitting at a desk.
- Fusion rotoscoping: use a Polygon or B-Spline mask and adjust it frame by frame wherever the outline changes. It's accurate but slow, especially around hair and moving hands.
If you do this often, Magic Mask in DaVinci Resolve Studio is the tool built for it. Whether the upgrade is worth it depends on how much footage you need to cut out. No pricing information was supplied here, so check the current terms before you decide.
How to export a video with a transparent background
Removing the background in your project doesn't make the exported file transparent. To export the keyed subject so you can layer it over other footage in another program, do the following:
- 1. On the Edit page, disable or delete any background tracks under the keyed clip.
- 2. Open the Deliver page and choose Custom Export.
- 3. Pick a format and codec that supports alpha. Common choices are QuickTime with Apple ProRes 4444, a 444 DNxHR variant, or a PNG or TIFF image sequence. Which codecs appear depends on your operating system and Resolve version.
- 4. Turn on Export Alpha. If the option is greyed out, the selected codec doesn't support transparency.
- 5. Add the job to the Render Queue and render.
Check the result: the Resolve viewer usually displays transparent areas as black, so a black background in the viewer doesn't prove the file is transparent. Import the rendered file into a new project, place it on a track above a different clip, and confirm that the lower clip shows through.
What this means for recorded speech
Background removal only affects the picture. Keying, masking and alpha export don't change the audio recorded by a webcam or an external microphone, so they won't add or remove noise, echo or level. If the keyed clip contains speech, check that audio is turned on in the Deliver page's Audio tab before rendering. An alpha-channel overlay exported without audio will play back silent.
If you're recording webcam footage that you plan to key, an evenly lit green screen and a subject standing a little away from it will make keying much easier. That setup is about lighting and doesn't affect how your microphone captures speech.
Evidence gaps
No version-specific documentation, test footage or measurements were supplied for this guide. The workflows above are long-standing features of the free version. However, exact menu labels, which codecs are available on Windows versus macOS, and whether Magic Mask is still Studio-only should all be checked against the release you have installed.
