How to Reduce Noise in WhatsApp Voice and Video Calls
Practical steps to reduce background noise in WhatsApp voice and video calls, including microphone placement, headset use, app settings, and connection checks.
Identify the symptom and environment
Start by noting when the noise appears. It may happen only during WhatsApp calls, only on speakerphone, or only when using a particular phone, computer, headset, or earbuds. Record the device and operating system version because the available audio controls differ between Android, iPhone, and desktop versions of WhatsApp.
Check whether the other person hears the noise or you hear it. If the remote caller hears background sounds from your side, the issue is usually your microphone, room, or audio input. If you hear noise from their side, ask them to try the same checks on their device.
Isolate where the fault occurs
Separate the causes before changing settings. Test the microphone in another app, such as a voice recording app or the camera app. If the noise also appears there, the problem is likely the microphone, connected input device, or nearby sound source rather than WhatsApp.
If you use a Bluetooth headset or earbuds, switch to the phone's built-in microphone for one short test call. If the noise disappears, the accessory or its connection is involved. On a computer, check which input device the operating system is using and confirm that WhatsApp has permission to use the microphone.
Try reversible fixes in order
Use headphones or a headset during the call. This prevents the speaker output from being picked up by the microphone and often reduces echo and feedback. Position the microphone away from fans, air conditioners, keyboards, papers, and other noisy objects.
Reduce room noise where possible. Close a door or window, move away from appliances, and avoid speaking directly at a hard wall that reflects sound. Soft surfaces such as curtains, cushions, or a carpet can reduce echo in an empty room.
Check the operating system audio controls. On many phones, call or media volume settings affect how loud the speaker is, but they do not specifically cancel background noise in all versions. Some device makers include additional call audio or noise-reduction controls in the phone settings; look for the option on your specific model rather than assuming a universal menu path.
Keep WhatsApp updated. Newer app versions may handle call audio differently, but do not treat an update as a guaranteed noise-cancellation fix. If you use a computer, close other apps that may be using the microphone at the same time.
Confirm the result
Make another short call under the same conditions as the original problem. Ask the other person whether the background noise is reduced or gone. Then switch back to any accessory or setting you changed only if the call still works normally.
If a headset solved the issue, test the call both with and without it. This confirms that the improvement comes from the input or output device and not simply from a quieter room or a better network connection.
If the problem remains
Keep a note of the device, app version, accessory, and the situation in which the noise occurs. If the microphone is noisy in every app, try a different supported microphone or headset if one is available.
Do not assume the phone or microphone is broken based only on call noise. A damaged cable, a blocked microphone opening, a case covering the mic, or a weak connection can produce similar symptoms. If the problem continues across apps and accessories, contact the device maker or a qualified repair service.
