How to Reduce Background Noise During Phone Calls

Practical steps to reduce background noise during phone calls, including voice call noise cancellation settings, mic placement, and app-level checks.

Identify the symptom and environment

Start by noting when the noise appears. A caller may hear traffic, fan hum, keyboard clicks, room echo, or a muffled voice. Record whether the complaint happens on speakerphone, with a wired headset, with Bluetooth earbuds, or when using the built-in microphone in a specific calling app. This matters because some noise comes from the microphone picking up the room, while other noise is introduced by the connection, the carrier, or an app's processing.

Isolate where the fault occurs

Make a short test call or use the app's audio test feature if available. Move to a quieter room and reduce obvious sound sources such as fans, televisions, or open windows. If the background noise drops, the issue is mainly acoustic. If the same noise remains even in a quiet room, test with a different input device: switch from speakerphone to a headset or plug in a wired microphone. A second calling app can also help separate app processing from device or network behavior.

Try reversible fixes in order

Begin with the simplest changes and return to the previous state if there is no improvement.

  • Move the microphone closer to your mouth and away from noise sources. For a handheld phone, hold it naturally rather than flat on a desk. For a headset mic, position it near the corner of the mouth without touching clothing.
  • Reduce input level or microphone gain if the calling app or operating system exposes it. A lower input level does not remove background noise, but it can prevent the mic from over-amplifying the room.
  • Turn on voice call noise cancellation where the option exists. On many phones, noise reduction is part of call audio processing and may be listed under call settings, accessibility, or sound settings. Keep the exact path based on the device version.
  • Disable extra audio effects such as voice enhancement, spatial audio, or automatic gain control if they appear to make the background more audible.
  • If using a Bluetooth device, switch to the phone mic or a wired headset temporarily. Bluetooth audio can introduce its own artifacts or routing problems.
  • Close other apps that may be using the microphone or speakers during the call. Some conferencing, recording, or media apps can change the audio route or input level.
  • Check the calling app's microphone permission and audio settings. Confirm the app is using the intended input device, not a different connected mic.

Confirm the result

Repeat the test call under the same conditions where the noise was originally reported. Ask the other person whether the background noise decreased and whether your voice remains clear and stable. Verify that the change you made is still active: for example, noise cancellation is enabled, the correct input device is selected, or the input level is at the new setting. If the improvement holds across a normal call, the original symptom is resolved.

If the problem remains

Keep a record of what changed and what did not. Note the device model, operating system version, calling app, network condition, and whether a headset or Bluetooth device was used. If noise continues only in one app or on one Wi-Fi network, treat that as an app or connection issue rather than a damaged microphone. If the problem appears with every app and every audio device, contact device support or an authorized repair service and mention the tests already completed.
