How to Find and Install a Qualcomm MTP Driver in Windows

Get a Qualcomm-based Android phone recognized for file transfer in Windows: check the USB mode, reinstall the built-in MTP driver, and fix common errors.

When a phone with a Qualcomm Snapdragon chip doesn't show up in File Explorer, people usually search for a Qualcomm MTP driver. In most cases Qualcomm doesn't supply a separate driver for this. File transfer over MTP (Media Transfer Protocol) uses the generic MTP driver that ships with Windows. Fixing the problem usually means getting Windows to use that built-in driver, not downloading a new one.

Before you start

Everything here happens on your PC and phone. No online service is needed, apart from Windows Update or your phone maker's official support page if you choose to use them. Check these points first:

  • Use a USB cable that carries data. Some cables only charge, and with those no device will appear.
  • Unlock the phone and keep it unlocked while you connect. Many Android versions hide storage while the screen is locked.
  • Make sure you have administrator rights on the PC. You need them to change drivers in Device Manager.
  • If your PC runs an N edition of Windows, install the Media Feature Pack from Windows optional features first. MTP support depends on media components that N editions leave out.
  • Know which mode you need. MTP is for copying photos, videos, recordings and other files. A device listed as Qualcomm HS-USB QDLoader 9008 or QUSB_BULK is in a service or flashing mode, not file transfer mode. The steps below won't apply to it.

"MTP" can also mean a Qualcomm development board rather than the transfer protocol. This guide covers phones and tablets connected for file transfer.

Step-by-step instructions

Each step can be undone. If a change doesn't help, unplug the device and move on to the next step.

  • 1. Connect the phone directly to a USB port on the PC, not through a hub, and unlock it.
  • 2. On the phone, open the USB notification and choose the file transfer option. The label differs by manufacturer and Android version, for example "File transfer" or "Transfer files". If you only see charging, tap the notification to see more options.
  • 3. If the phone asks whether to allow access to device data, confirm it on the phone.
  • 4. On the PC, right-click the Start button and open Device Manager.
  • 5. Look for the phone under Portable Devices. Also check Other devices, which lists unrecognized hardware, often with a yellow warning icon and a name like MTP, the phone model, or Unknown device.
  • 6. Right-click the entry and choose Update driver, then Browse my computer for drivers, then Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer.
  • 7. If the list asks for a device type, choose Portable Devices. Select the standard MTP device entry and the model named MTP USB Device, then confirm. If that model isn't listed, clear the Show compatible hardware option and look again.
  • 8. Unplug the phone, wait a few seconds, reconnect it and select file transfer mode again.

If Windows still won't use the built-in driver, get the USB driver package from your phone manufacturer's official support page, or install its official PC companion app. These packages can include the Qualcomm USB components for that model. Avoid driver bundles from unofficial download sites. They may be outdated, unsigned or modified, and a driver runs with deep access to your system.

Check the output

In Device Manager, the phone should appear under Portable Devices without a warning icon. In File Explorer, it should appear under This PC by its device name. Open it and confirm you can browse internal storage, such as the camera folder.

Copy one photo, video or audio file to a local folder and open it on the PC. This confirms the transfer works, not just the connection.

Some limits are normal with MTP. The phone has no drive letter, so some editing apps can't open files directly from it. Copy files to the PC first, then edit them. Large folders can be slow to list. If you copy files back to the phone, check that they appear in the right app, because some gallery or music apps only show new files after they rescan storage.

Common problems and next steps

The phone only charges and nothing appears on the PC: try another data cable and another USB port, then unlock the phone and select file transfer mode again. If Device Manager shows no new device at all, the cable or port is the more likely cause, not the driver.

Device Manager shows an error such as "This device cannot start" or a failed driver install: repeat the manual driver selection with the MTP USB Device model. If that fails, right-click the device, choose Uninstall device, unplug the phone and reconnect it so Windows detects it again. Only tick the option to delete the driver software if you know that driver came from a third-party package you want to remove.

The device appears as Qualcomm HS-USB QDLoader 9008: the phone is in a low-level service mode, not normal Android. Restart it normally before trying file transfer. Don't install firmware tools or flash anything just to copy files.

The phone appears but its folders are empty: unlock the screen, confirm any access prompt on the phone, and reselect file transfer mode. Some devices reset to charging only each time they're reconnected.

If none of these steps work, check for pending Windows updates and restart the PC. Then try the phone on another computer. If it fails there too, the cause is probably the phone or its USB port, not the Windows driver.
