Prepare LinkedIn Post Images with the Right Aspect Ratio

Learn the recommended LinkedIn post image aspect ratio, common source dimensions, and how to resize images without distorting the content.

The essential size and ratio

For a shared link or article preview on LinkedIn, the image usually works best at portrait or square sizes. Common recommended dimensions are 1200 by 627 pixels, which is close to a 1.91:1 ratio, or 1080 by 1080 pixels for a 1:1 square. The main constraint is that LinkedIn may crop some formats in the feed, so choose a ratio based on whether you need a compact square or a wider preview.

Why aspect ratio matters more than exact pixels

Keeping the original ratio prevents stretching while giving you a predictable final presentation. If you export a larger image but maintain the same width-to-height relationship, the result will still fit the feed without awkward compression. Avoid forcing an exact pixel size if doing so would crop important text or faces.

Resize without distortion

  • Start with an image larger than the target width, such as at least 1200 pixels wide.
  • Set the target dimensions while keeping the original ratio if possible.
  • If the tool has a crop option, frame the important content inside the target ratio before exporting.
  • Export as JPEG or PNG at the final dimensions.
  • Save a fresh filename so the original file remains unchanged.

What to avoid

Do not stretch a landscape into a square and do not scale any image too far below its original size if text must remain readable. Check the preview at actual size before publishing. If the selected ratio is not available in your tool, crop to the nearest matching ratio instead of squeezing the image to fit.
