MY WEBCAM TEST GUIDE

Can You Use a Phone as a Webcam for PS5?

Using a phone as a PS5 webcam: why most phone-webcam apps can't connect directly, the PC-based workaround, and how to make sure your voice is captured.

The short answer

Not directly, in most cases. Popular phone-webcam apps rely on companion drivers or software installed on a Windows or Mac computer, and the PS5 cannot install third-party drivers or apps of that kind. The dependable workaround routes everything through a computer. The phone becomes a webcam for the PC, the PS5 gameplay reaches the same PC through a capture card or Remote Play, and you broadcast or record from the PC rather than from the console.

Even when the camera side works, it does little for speech. On the PS5 itself, your voice is normally captured by the DualSense controller's built-in microphone or by a headset, not by a camera. Treat the phone as a video source and plan your microphone separately.

Why a phone doesn't plug straight into a PS5

Sony's own camera accessory for the console is the PS5 HD Camera. Some system software updates have been reported to add support for certain standard USB webcams, meaning generic cameras that follow the USB Video Class (UVC) standard and need no special driver. Exact support varies by system software version, so check Sony's current support information before buying hardware.

Phones generally do not appear to a console as a UVC camera:

  • Third-party webcam apps for Android and iPhone usually send video over Wi-Fi or USB to a desktop client that creates a virtual camera on the computer. There is no equivalent client for the PS5.
  • iPhone Continuity Camera is an Apple feature designed to work with a Mac. It is not a general USB webcam mode.
  • Recent Android versions include a built-in USB webcam mode on some devices, which presents the phone as a standard UVC camera. In principle, a UVC-capable host could recognize it. However, no confirmed evidence was found that this mode works with a PS5. Treat it as something to try, not something to rely on.

Your options compared

Approach | Works on PS5 alone? | What it needs | Speech capture
Phone webcam app (desktop-client type) | No | A PC or Mac running the companion software | Handled separately; app audio support varies and was not verified
Android built-in USB webcam mode | Unconfirmed | A supported Android phone and a USB cable | Not verified whether phone audio passes through
Phone as PC webcam plus capture card | Yes, via the PC | Capture card, PC, streaming or recording software | Choose any mic on the PC, or capture PS5 chat audio
PS5 HD Camera or a supported USB webcam | Yes | Compatible camera | Use the DualSense mic or a headset

How to set up the PC-based workaround

Exact menu names differ between apps, operating system versions and PS5 system software versions. Treat the steps below as the general sequence and confirm the labels on your own devices.

What you need

  • A PC or Mac capable of running streaming or recording software such as OBS Studio
  • A phone-webcam app installed on both the phone and the computer
  • A capture card connected between the PS5 and the computer. Alternatively, you can show gameplay on the computer through PS Remote Play, which uses a network connection rather than a capture card.
  • A microphone: a USB or analog mic on the computer, a headset, or the DualSense controller if chat audio stays on the console

Steps

  • 1. Install the webcam app on the phone and its desktop client on the computer. Connect them over USB or the same Wi-Fi network, following the app's instructions.
  • 2. Confirm the phone appears as a camera on the computer, for example in the operating system's camera app or in your streaming software's video device list.
  • 3. Connect the PS5 HDMI output to the capture card's input. Then connect the capture card's output to your TV or monitor if it offers passthrough, and connect the card to the computer. Alternatively, start a Remote Play session on the computer.
  • 4. In your streaming software, add the capture card or Remote Play window as one source and the phone camera as another. Position the camera overlay where you want it.
  • 5. Decide where your voice will be captured. Add your computer microphone as an audio input in the streaming software. If you also use PS5 party chat, configure the console's input device as described in the next section.
  • 6. Start a short test recording before going live.

Getting your voice captured correctly

Audio input selection is where most setups go wrong, because there are often two separate audio paths. Game and party chat audio is handled by the PS5, while stream commentary is handled by the computer. Decide which microphone serves each path.

  • On the PS5: the microphone input setting is in the console's Sound settings, under Microphone. Choose the controller mic or your headset, and use the mic level adjustment there. If both a headset and the controller are connected, check which one is selected.
  • On the computer: choose the specific microphone as an audio source in your streaming software, not just the system default, so a different device can't be picked up by mistake.
  • Phone microphone: some webcam apps can send phone audio to the computer, but this varies by app and was not verified here. A phone placed for a good camera angle is often farther from your mouth than a headset or desk mic. Distance generally lowers speech level relative to room noise and echo.

Check that speech is actually being captured

  • PS5: open the microphone level adjustment in Sound settings and speak at normal volume. The level indicator should move with your voice and stay below its maximum.
  • Streaming software: watch the audio mixer meter for your chosen microphone while speaking. It should respond to your voice, while other inputs stay quiet when you are silent. If the wrong meter moves, the wrong device is selected.
  • Record 20 to 30 seconds of talking with gameplay running. Play it back to confirm your voice is clear, not clipped or distorted, and not drowned out by game audio. Also check that it isn't duplicated, which happens when both the PS5 chat mic and the PC mic capture you.

Evidence gaps

No confirmed testing data was available for this guide. Specifically, it was not verified whether a phone in Android's native webcam mode is recognized by a PS5, which phone-webcam apps transmit microphone audio, or which USB webcams the current PS5 system software accepts. If direct phone-to-PS5 use matters to you, check Sony's current camera compatibility information and your phone manufacturer's documentation before buying extra hardware.
