How to Use Panopto for Screen Recording on iPad
Learn how to record your iPad screen with the Panopto app, adjust recording settings, stop and upload a session, and fix common iPad screen recording issues.
Before you start
Screen recording with Panopto on an iPad happens through the Panopto mobile app. The recording is created on the device and then uploaded to your organization's Panopto site, so you need an account that allows recording, an iPad with enough free storage for the session, and a network connection for signing in and uploading. Your organization controls whether mobile uploads and screen recording are available in the app.
Step-by-step instructions
Install the Panopto app from the App Store if it is not already on the iPad, then open the app and sign in with the web address used by your organization. After signing in, look for the create or record action, which may appear as a button in the library or on the main screen.
Choose screen recording if the app offers separate options for recording the screen, camera, or audio. If the option is not visible, it may be disabled for your account or unavailable in the version installed on the device.
iOS requires screen broadcast permission before an app can capture the screen. When the recording starts, the system may show a prompt asking you to allow screen broadcasting. Follow the on-screen steps to enable Panopto or the screen recording extension for the session.
Before you begin the actual presentation, check the visible controls for microphone audio. Enable the microphone only when the session needs narration or ambient sound. If settings allow you to select video quality or resolution, choose a setting that balances file size with the level of on-screen detail you need.
Start the recording, then switch to the app or document you want to demonstrate. Everything shown on the iPad screen can be captured while screen broadcast is active. Keep the device in the orientation you want to record because changing orientation during the session may affect the output.
Return to the Panopto app and stop the recording when the demonstration is complete. The app may ask you to name the session, select a destination folder, or confirm other details before or after upload.
Check the output
Wait for the upload to finish and keep the app open if it shows an upload progress indicator. Once the session appears in the Panopto library, open it and verify that the screen movement is visible and that the audio, if enabled, can be heard.
Check whether the recorded screen fills the player properly and whether the video appears sharp enough for the content being demonstrated. Small text may become difficult to read if the source screen was compressed heavily or if the iPad resolution was not suitable for the capture.
Common problems and next steps
If the recording contains no screen image, the most likely cause is that the broadcast permission was not granted or the screen recording extension was not selected before recording began. Start a short test recording and complete the system permission prompt again.
If the recording has no sound, check whether the microphone was enabled in the Panopto recording controls and whether iOS lists microphone access for the app. Silent or masked content may also occur when the iPad is in a mode that restricts audio capture.
If the video does not appear in the library, confirm that the upload completed and that the session was saved to the expected folder. A failed upload can occur after a poor connection or if the app was closed before the transfer finished.
If the Panopto app does not show a screen recording option, check for an available app update and confirm with your organization's Panopto administrator that mobile screen recording is enabled for your account.
