How to Install an Oppo MTP Driver on Windows 10

Get your Oppo phone recognized for file transfer on Windows 10: enable File transfer mode, install the built-in MTP USB Device driver, and fix common errors.

When an Oppo phone connects to a Windows 10 PC but only charges, or appears in Device Manager with a warning icon, the problem is usually the MTP (Media Transfer Protocol) driver. MTP is what lets File Explorer browse the phone's storage so you can copy photos, videos and audio recordings. Windows 10 ships with a generic MTP driver, so in most cases the fix is to make Windows use it correctly rather than to download extra software.

Before you start

  • A Windows 10 PC and an account with administrator rights, which Windows requires for driver changes.
  • A USB cable that supports data, not a charge-only cable. The cable that came with the phone is the safest choice.
  • Your Oppo phone unlocked, because Android hides storage from the PC while the screen is locked.
  • A free USB port directly on the computer rather than on a hub or monitor.
  • If your PC runs a Windows 10 N edition, the Media Feature Pack, which N editions lack and which MTP depends on.

The whole process runs locally between the phone and the PC. MTP file transfer does not need an Oppo account, a cloud service or a separate Oppo download. Windows may look for driver updates through Windows Update if that is enabled, so check your update settings if you need to know exactly what the PC contacts. Note that the driver used for USB debugging (ADB) is a different component; it is not needed for ordinary file transfer.

Step-by-step instructions

  • Unlock the phone and connect it to the PC with the data cable.
  • On the phone, pull down the notification shade and tap the USB connection notification. Choose the file transfer option. Its wording differs between ColorOS versions, for example File transfer or Transfer files. If no notification appears, look for the USB preferences in the phone's settings; the location varies by model and version.
  • Wait a minute. Windows 10 normally installs the built-in MTP driver automatically, and the phone then appears under This PC in File Explorer. If it does, you are done.
  • If it does not appear, right-click the Start button and open Device Manager.
  • Look for the phone under Portable Devices, Other devices or Universal Serial Bus devices. It may be listed by model name, as MTP, or as an unknown device with a yellow warning icon.
  • Right-click the entry and choose Update driver, then Browse my computer for drivers, then Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer.
  • If MTP USB Device appears in the list of compatible hardware, select it. If Windows first asks for a device type, choose Portable Devices, then select MTP USB Device from the standard MTP device entries.
  • Click Next, confirm any prompt, then unplug the phone and reconnect it with the screen unlocked.

These changes are reversible. If the device behaves worse after the update, open its Properties in Device Manager, go to the Driver tab and use Roll Back Driver if it is available, or choose Uninstall device and reconnect the phone so Windows detects it again.

On a Windows 10 N edition, install the Media Feature Pack before repeating the steps. On recent Windows 10 versions it is offered under Settings, Apps, Apps & features, Optional features, Add a feature. Restart the PC after installing it.

Check the output

In Device Manager, the phone should now be listed under Portable Devices without a warning icon. In File Explorer, open This PC and look for the phone's name. Opening it should show the internal storage, and camera photos and videos are typically in the DCIM folder. Copy one small file from the phone to the PC and one back to confirm that transfer works in both directions.

Keep a few MTP limitations in mind. The phone does not get a drive letter, and some programs cannot open or edit files directly on an MTP device, so copy media to a local folder before editing. MTP copies files rather than converting them, so if the camera saves photos or video in HEIF or HEVC format, Windows 10 may need the matching codec extensions before it can preview those files.

Common problems and next steps

  • Phone only charges: try another cable and port, unlock the phone, and select the file transfer option again in the USB notification.
  • MTP USB Device driver failed or the device shows a yellow warning: open the folder C:\Windows\INF, right-click wpdmtp.inf and choose Install, then reconnect the phone. If the file is missing or the error persists on an N edition, install the Media Feature Pack.
  • The phone appears but the storage is empty: unlock the screen, reselect file transfer, then unplug and reconnect.
  • The driver update is blocked: sign in with an administrator account and repeat the Device Manager steps.
  • Nothing changes: restart both the phone and the PC, check Windows Update for optional driver updates, and test with another computer to tell a PC problem from a phone or cable problem. If the phone fails on every PC, contact Oppo support.
  • You need USB debugging rather than file transfer: that requires the ADB driver, which is separate from MTP.
