How to Install a OnePlus MTP Driver in Windows

Get Windows to recognize a OnePlus 6 for file transfer: set USB mode, install the built-in MTP driver through Device Manager and fix common connection errors.

When a OnePlus 6 connects to a Windows PC but never shows up in File Explorer, the cause is usually the MTP (Media Transfer Protocol) driver or the phone's USB mode. Windows ships with a generic MTP driver, so in most cases the fix is to make Windows use it correctly rather than to hunt for a separate download. This guide covers the OnePlus 6 specifically, and the same approach applies to most other OnePlus phones.

Before you start

  • A USB cable that supports data, not only charging. If you are unsure, try the cable that came with the phone or one you know transfers data with another device.
  • A direct USB port on the computer. Front-panel ports, hubs and docks can cause intermittent connections.
  • The phone unlocked during setup. Android does not expose storage over MTP while the screen is locked.
  • Administrator access on the Windows account, because changing a device driver requires it.
  • Your Windows edition. N and KN editions of Windows do not include media components that MTP depends on until the Media Feature Pack is installed.

Everything here runs locally on your PC and phone. No online service or account is required, apart from Windows Update if you choose to let it search for drivers or install the Media Feature Pack. Avoid third-party driver bundles from unknown sources: the MTP driver Windows needs is already part of the operating system, and an unverified installer adds risk without solving the usual problem.

Step-by-step instructions

1. Set the phone to file transfer mode

Connect the phone and unlock it. Pull down the notification shade and tap the USB notification, which by default usually indicates the phone is only charging. Choose the file transfer option. The exact wording differs between Android versions the OnePlus 6 received over its update life, so look for File transfer, Transfer files or MTP rather than Charging only, PTP or MIDI. PTP mode exposes only photo folders and is not the same as MTP.

If the phone resets to charging every time you reconnect, Developer options on newer Android versions include a Default USB configuration setting where you can select file transfer. Developer options are hidden until you enable them, and you can switch this setting back at any time.

2. Use the OnePlus driver installer if the phone offers one

Some OxygenOS versions present a small virtual drive containing a OnePlus USB driver installer when the phone is first connected. If such a drive appears in File Explorer, you can run the installer from it. If it does not appear, skip this step; the Windows driver below is sufficient for file transfer.

3. Assign the Windows MTP driver in Device Manager

  • 1. Right-click the Start button and open Device Manager.
  • 2. With the phone connected and unlocked, look for the phone under Portable Devices, Other devices or Universal Serial Bus devices. It may appear under a model name such as ONEPLUS A6003, as MTP or as an unknown device with a yellow warning icon.
  • 3. Right-click the entry and choose Update driver.
  • 4. Choose to browse your computer for drivers, then choose to pick from a list of available drivers on your computer.
  • 5. If a device type list appears, select Portable Devices (or Android Device, if that is what is listed) and continue.
  • 6. Select MTP USB Device and confirm. Accept any compatibility warning only if you selected the MTP entry.
  • 7. Unplug the phone, wait a few seconds, reconnect it and select file transfer again if prompted.

This change is reversible. If the device behaves worse afterward, open its Properties in Device Manager and use Roll Back Driver on the Driver tab if it is available, or uninstall the device and reconnect the phone so Windows detects it again.

4. Windows N and KN editions

On these editions, the MTP USB Device option may be missing or fail to start. Install the Media Feature Pack that matches your Windows version, either through Optional features in Settings on recent versions or through the installer Microsoft provides for older builds, then restart and repeat step 3.

Check the output

Open File Explorer and look under This PC. The phone should appear as a portable device, not as a drive letter, with internal shared storage inside it. Open a folder such as DCIM, copy one small file from the phone to the PC and another from the PC to the phone, then confirm both files open on the receiving side.

Keep MTP's normal limitations in mind when judging the result. Files are copied, not opened in place, so some desktop programs cannot read them directly from the phone. Very large transfers can be slower than with a mass storage device, and moving many small files is slower still. A file you just created on the phone may not show up in Windows until Android indexes it, so reconnecting or waiting briefly is worth trying before assuming the driver failed. Check copied photos and videos at full size before deleting originals.

Common problems and next steps

The phone charges but nothing appears in Windows: this usually points to the cable or the USB mode rather than the driver. Change the mode to file transfer, then try a different data cable and a rear USB port before reinstalling anything.

Device Manager shows Unknown USB Device or a device descriptor error: Windows is not receiving valid data from the phone, so a driver change will not help. Try another cable and port, restart both devices and clean the phone's USB-C port carefully.

The phone appears but folders are empty: unlock the phone and check for a prompt asking whether to allow access to device data. Reconnect if you dismissed it.

The MTP USB Device entry shows an error after installation: uninstall the device in Device Manager, disconnect the phone, restart Windows and reconnect. On N or KN editions, confirm the Media Feature Pack is installed.

You installed an ADB or fastboot driver instead: those drivers are for developer tools and do not provide file access. If the phone is listed as an ADB interface while you expect file transfer, switch the USB mode to file transfer and confirm the MTP entry is the one in use under Portable Devices.

Other OnePlus models: the generic Windows MTP driver and the same Device Manager steps generally apply across OnePlus phones. Model names in Device Manager and the wording of the USB notification differ by device and Android version, so match the option by function rather than by exact label.
