Video Capture Device Black Screen in OBS: Causes and Fixes
Why an OBS Video Capture Device shows a black screen, how to fix it step by step, how it differs from a black OBS Virtual Camera, and what it means for webcam audio.
The short answer
A black Video Capture Device source in OBS usually means OBS cannot get frames from the camera, even though it can see the device. The most common reasons are that another application is already using the webcam, the operating system is blocking camera access for OBS, or the source is requesting a resolution, frame rate or video format the camera does not deliver. Check these three first. This guide reflects general, widely documented OBS behavior rather than specific test measurements. Menu names and options can differ between OBS versions and operating systems.
A black screen inside OBS is a different problem from a black picture in a meeting app that uses OBS Virtual Camera. The two have different causes, so first identify where the black image appears.
Black inside OBS versus black in your meeting app
| Where the black image appears | What it usually indicates | Where to look first |
| The Video Capture Device source in the OBS preview | OBS is not receiving frames from the physical camera or capture card | Other apps using the camera, OS privacy permissions, source resolution and format settings |
| A conferencing app that has OBS Virtual Camera selected | The virtual camera has not been started, or the app opened it before it was running | Start Virtual Camera in OBS, then reselect the camera in the meeting app or restart that app |
| The OBS preview, only for a capture card connected to a playback device | The source may be sending copy-protected (HDCP) video, which capture devices commonly show as black | Settings on the source device, a different input source |
Common causes of a black Video Capture Device source
- Another program holds the camera. On Windows, a webcam is often available to only one application at a time. Close meeting apps, the Camera app, browser tabs with video calls, and vendor webcam utilities, then reactivate the source.
- OS camera permission is off. On Windows, check the camera privacy settings and confirm that desktop apps can use the camera. On macOS, check that OBS is allowed under Camera in Privacy & Security. Restart OBS after you change the permission.
- The resolution, frame rate or format is unsupported. If the source uses a custom resolution, FPS or video format that the camera does not support, the preview can stay black. Return these settings to the device default, or try a different format, such as switching between MJPEG and an uncompressed option where the camera offers both.
- The wrong device is selected. Confirm the Device dropdown lists your actual webcam. If it lists OBS Virtual Camera instead, OBS is trying to capture its own output, which will not show your webcam.
- The source is deactivated or stuck. Open the source properties and use the Deactivate and Activate button. Alternatively, remove the source and add it again. If the device still stays black, restart OBS.
- The same camera appears in more than one source or scene. Several sources that point to the same physical camera can conflict. Use one source and reuse it across scenes, by copying it or using a nested scene.
If none of these steps works, test the camera in another application with OBS closed. A black picture in other apps points to a driver, cable, USB port or hardware problem rather than an OBS setting.
When OBS Virtual Camera is black in a conferencing app
OBS Virtual Camera sends only what OBS is producing, and only after you start it. The usual order is: open OBS, check that the preview shows the expected scene, click Start Virtual Camera, then choose OBS Virtual Camera in the meeting app. If the meeting app was already open, you may need to select another camera and then switch back, or restart the app, so it reconnects to the running virtual camera. If the OBS preview is black, the virtual camera will be black too. In that case, fix the Video Capture Device source first.
What this means for webcam audio
A webcam's built-in microphone usually appears to the operating system as a separate audio input device. A black video source therefore does not necessarily mean the microphone has failed, and working video does not guarantee that the microphone is being captured. Check the OBS Audio Mixer. If the meter moves when you speak, OBS is receiving sound.
- Video Capture Device audio: On Windows, the Video Capture Device source has audio options, including using a custom audio device. If you select the webcam microphone here and also add it as a separate Audio Input Capture source, you may capture it twice, which can cause echo or doubled sound.
- Dedicated audio source: Adding the webcam microphone as its own Audio Input Capture source makes its level and filters easier to manage. On a single source, microphone problems are also easier to separate from camera problems.
- Virtual Camera carries no audio: OBS Virtual Camera sends video only. In a meeting app, choose the microphone directly in that app's audio settings. If you want audio processed by OBS, you need a separate virtual audio routing tool or OBS's monitoring output, set up deliberately to avoid echo.
Gaps in this guide
No device-specific evidence was available for this guide: no tested camera models, driver versions, OBS release notes or measured results. The steps above are general troubleshooting principles that apply to most USB webcams and capture devices. Behavior with a particular camera, capture card or OBS version may differ. For hardware-specific problems, the camera or capture card manufacturer's documentation is the more reliable reference.
