OBS Freezes or Makes the Computer Unresponsive
Why OBS freezes or locks up your computer during webcam capture, how to tell an app hang from a system-level problem, and how to protect your speech recordings.
The Short Answer
When OBS freezes, the cause is usually one of three things: the computer is overloaded by the encoding and capture settings, a capture device such as a webcam or its built-in microphone is stalling or being fought over by another program, or a driver or plugin is misbehaving. If OBS alone stops responding, the problem is most likely inside OBS. If the whole computer becomes unresponsive, OBS is probably only the trigger. The real problem is more likely a graphics or USB driver, or system resources running out, because an ordinary application should not be able to lock up the operating system by itself.
An important limit applies to this guide. No specific evidence, test results or measurements were supplied for it. The guidance below rests on general, verifiable principles of how OBS and capture hardware work. It is not a diagnosis of any particular system. The OBS log file from the session that froze is the most reliable source for pinning down your actual cause.
OBS Freezing vs. the Whole Computer Freezing
| Symptom | What it usually points to | First thing to check |
| OBS window stops responding, but other programs still work | A stalled source, a plugin, or OBS waiting on a device that will not answer | Remove or disable recently added sources and plugins, then test the webcam on its own |
| Preview freezes, but audio meters still move (or the reverse) | A problem limited to one source, often the webcam video or its microphone | Deactivate and reactivate that source, or re-select the device in its properties |
| Whole system becomes sluggish or locks up | Resource exhaustion, or a graphics, USB or capture driver fault | Lower the encoding load, update graphics and chipset drivers, and try a different USB port |
| Freeze happens only when you start recording or streaming | Encoder settings demanding more than the hardware can sustain | Switch to a hardware encoder, or lower the resolution, frame rate or preset |
Why This Matters for Speech Capture
Most webcams with built-in microphones appear to the computer as one USB device that carries both video and audio. A problem on the video side can therefore interrupt the microphone as well. If the webcam stops responding, perhaps because of insufficient USB bandwidth, a power-saving suspend or a driver fault, OBS can be left waiting on the device. The result can be a frozen preview, missing audio or a hang.
A freeze in the middle of a recording can also cost you the speech you already captured. OBS can record in MKV format, which is designed to stay readable even if the recording stops abruptly. MP4 files can end up unplayable if recording is interrupted. If freezes are a risk, record to MKV and use the remux function under the File menu to convert to MP4 afterward.
Practical Next Steps
- Read the log: after restarting OBS, open the Help menu and view the log from the previous session. Errors near the end of the file often name the source, device or plugin involved.
- Use safe mode if offered: recent OBS versions can start in a safe mode after an unexpected shutdown, which disables third-party plugins. If the freeze disappears there, a plugin is the likely cause.
- Check for device conflicts: close other apps that may be holding the webcam or its microphone, such as conferencing software, then re-select the device in the OBS source properties.
- Isolate the webcam: plug it directly into the computer rather than a hub, try a different port, and test with only that one source in a scene.
- Match audio settings: make sure the sample rate set in OBS audio settings matches what the microphone and the system expect. Commonly that is 48 kHz. A mismatch can cause audio problems, though it is a less common cause of full freezes.
- Reduce load: if the freeze coincides with starting a recording or stream, try a hardware encoder instead of software (x264), or lower the output resolution or frame rate.
- On Windows, run OBS as administrator: this lets OBS request higher GPU priority, which can help when a game or another graphics-heavy program is competing for the GPU.
- Update drivers: whole-system lockups especially warrant updating the graphics, chipset and USB drivers, along with any webcam-specific software.
What This Guide Cannot Confirm
Without your log files, hardware details or operating system version, it is not possible to say which cause applies to you. These steps are ordered to separate an OBS-level hang from a system-level fault and to protect your recorded audio while you troubleshoot. If the whole computer still locks up after OBS is closed or its sources are removed, the problem lies outside OBS and should be investigated at the driver or hardware level.
