OBS Background Removal Tool: Removing a Webcam Background Without a Green Screen

How to remove a webcam background in OBS Studio without a green screen, what the options are, and what it means for your microphone, sync and calls.

The short answer

OBS Studio can remove a webcam background without a green screen, but not with its standard keying filters. The built-in Chroma Key and Color Key filters work only when the background is a single, evenly lit color. To cut yourself out of an ordinary room, you need a segmentation-based filter. That means either a third-party background removal plugin or, on supported NVIDIA graphics hardware, NVIDIA's video-effect filters. Both work on the video image only. They do nothing to the sound your microphone picks up, and they can add processing load that affects how well audio and video stay in sync.

Why the built-in keying filters need a green screen

Chroma keying removes every pixel close to a chosen color. It works well when the backdrop is uniform and distinct from your skin, hair and clothing. In a normal room, the background contains many colors that also appear on you, so a color key either leaves the room visible or erases parts of your face and clothes. Removing a background without a green screen requires software that recognizes the shape of a person in each frame. This technique is called person segmentation, and OBS does not provide it in its default filter set.

Ways to remove a background in OBS without a green screen

Approach | How it works | Main requirement | Main limitation
Third-party background removal plugin | A machine-learning model separates the person from the background in each frame, and the plugin applies the result as a filter on the camera source | A plugin build that matches your OBS version and operating system | Uses CPU or GPU resources. Edge quality depends on lighting, the camera and the settings
NVIDIA video-effect filters in OBS | Segmentation runs on NVIDIA's own effects library and is exposed as an OBS filter | A supported NVIDIA RTX GPU on Windows plus NVIDIA's effects components | Not available on other GPUs or platforms
Background effects outside OBS (camera vendor software or operating-system camera effects) | The camera feed is processed before OBS receives it | Support from your camera software or operating system | Some tools only blur the background rather than replace it, and OBS has less control over the result
Chroma Key or Color Key (built into OBS) | Removes a chosen color range | A physical, evenly lit single-color backdrop | Does not work without a green screen or similar backdrop

Typical setup with a background removal plugin

The exact menu names and options depend on the plugin version, so treat the following as the general pattern rather than a precise walkthrough.

  • Install a background removal plugin build that matches your OBS version and operating system, then restart OBS.
  • Select your webcam source (a Video Capture Device source) and open its Filters.
  • Add the background removal filter from the list of effect filters.
  • Adjust the available controls, which commonly cover the detection threshold, edge smoothing or feathering, and model choice, until hair and shoulder edges look clean without flicker.
  • Place a background image, video or color source beneath the webcam source in the scene so it shows through the removed area.
  • Watch the OBS status bar or stats panel for skipped or lagged frames after enabling the filter.

Lighting matters more than any setting. Segmentation models separate a person from the background more reliably when you are lit evenly from the front, the background is not much brighter than you, and there is some distance between you and the wall behind you. These are general principles of how segmentation behaves, not measured results for any particular plugin.

What background removal does not do for your audio

Removing the visual background has no effect on room sound. A viewer will still hear the fan, keyboard, echo or traffic that your webcam microphone or headset picks up, even if the room is no longer visible. If the goal is a cleaner-sounding call or stream, handle audio separately on the microphone source in OBS. Its audio filters include Noise Suppression, which offers RNNoise and Speex options and an NVIDIA option on supported hardware, along with Noise Gate and Compressor. Noise suppression reduces steady background noise. A noise gate mutes the input when you are not speaking. A compressor narrows the gap between quiet and loud speech.

Webcam microphones usually sit an arm's length or more from your mouth, so they capture more room sound relative to your voice than a headset or desk microphone placed closer. Hiding the room visually can make that mismatch more noticeable, because viewers see a clean, isolated image but hear a reverberant room.

Audio and video sync after adding a background filter

Segmentation filters process every video frame. On a heavily loaded system, the extra work can delay the video relative to the audio or cause dropped frames, making lips appear to move after the words are heard. Whether this happens, and by how much, depends on your hardware, resolution, frame rate and filter settings. No measurements were available for this guide. If you notice a mismatch, OBS lets you shift a microphone's timing in Advanced Audio Properties using the Sync Offset field. Lowering the webcam resolution or frame rate, or moving processing to a supported GPU, can also reduce the load.

Using the result in Zoom, Teams or other conferencing apps

To send the background-removed picture to a conferencing app, start the OBS Virtual Camera and choose it as the camera in the app. The virtual camera carries video only, so the conferencing app still takes audio directly from whichever microphone you select in its own settings. The OBS audio filters you set up earlier do not apply to that signal. Two practical consequences follow:

  • Choose the microphone explicitly in the conferencing app's audio settings, whether it is the webcam's built-in microphone, a headset or a USB microphone, rather than relying on the system default.
  • Because the app receives the microphone directly while the video passes through OBS processing, any delay added by the background filter can appear as lip-sync drift in the call. The app's own noise suppression, not OBS's, controls how your voice sounds there.

Routing OBS-processed audio into a call requires an additional virtual audio device, which is outside the scope of the background removal tool itself.

Gaps in the available evidence

No verified test data was available for this guide. It contains no measured CPU or GPU usage, added latency, edge accuracy or comparisons between plugin versions and NVIDIA filters, and no confirmed version numbers or hardware lists. The guidance above relies on how OBS filters and person segmentation generally work. Before relying on a setup for a live call or stream, check the current documentation for your plugin and OBS version, and record a short local test to confirm both the edge quality and audio-video sync.

Quick checklist

  • Use a segmentation-based filter (a plugin or NVIDIA effects) rather than Chroma Key when you have no green screen.
  • Light yourself evenly from the front and keep some distance from the wall behind you.
  • Check for skipped or lagged frames after enabling the filter.
  • Treat room noise separately with microphone filters, since background removal is visual only.
  • In conferencing apps, select the microphone manually and test lip sync, because the OBS Virtual Camera does not carry audio.
