OBS Background Blur Filter: What Exists, How to Add It, and What It Means for Your Webcam Audio
OBS Studio has no general-purpose background blur filter built in. Learn the plugin and GPU-based options, a basic setup, and why blur won't carry your webcam mic audio.
The short answer
OBS Studio's core filter set does not include a general-purpose background blur that works with any webcam on any computer. You normally add blur in one of two ways. The first is a third-party background removal plugin that uses a segmentation model to separate you from your surroundings. The second, on supported Windows systems, is the background effects filter tied to NVIDIA RTX graphics hardware. The main limit is hardware and platform: the NVIDIA route needs compatible NVIDIA hardware and software, and plugin performance depends on your CPU or GPU.
For webcam audio, the key point is that background blur only processes video. It does not change, clean or route the sound from your webcam's built-in microphone. If you send OBS output to a meeting app through OBS Virtual Camera, that feed carries video only. You must set up your microphone separately.
Ways to get a blurred background in OBS
- Third-party background removal plugin: Community plugins such as the widely used "Background Removal" plugin add a filter to a video capture source. It can remove, replace or blur the background using on-device machine-learning segmentation. You install it separately from OBS, and its options and supported platforms depend on the plugin version.
- NVIDIA background effects (Windows, RTX hardware): When NVIDIA's video effects components are installed on a system with a supported RTX GPU, OBS can show NVIDIA background filters on a video source. This route uses the graphics card and is not available on other hardware.
- Green screen plus chroma key: OBS includes a Chroma Key filter. With a physical green or blue screen, you can key out the backdrop and place a blurred or replacement image behind yourself. The result is usually cleaner than software segmentation, but it needs a backdrop and even lighting.
- Blur inside the meeting app instead: Many conferencing apps offer their own background blur. If you only need blur for a call and are not composing scenes in OBS, the app's built-in option is often the simpler path.
General setup outline
Menu names vary by OBS version and plugin, so treat these as general steps rather than exact labels.
- Install the plugin or the required NVIDIA components, then restart OBS.
- In your scene, right-click the webcam (Video Capture Device) source and open Filters.
- Add the background removal or NVIDIA background filter under the video or effect filters.
- Choose blur rather than removal or replacement if the filter offers that choice, then adjust blur strength and edge or threshold settings until hair and shoulder edges look natural.
- If you need the result in a meeting app, start OBS Virtual Camera and select it as the camera in that app.
What background blur means for capturing your voice
Video filters and audio sources are separate in OBS. Adding blur to your webcam source leaves your microphone signal unchanged. Any audio clean-up, such as OBS's built-in noise suppression, noise gate or compressor filters, has to be added to the audio source itself.
OBS Virtual Camera outputs video only. In a meeting app, you still pick a microphone directly, such as the webcam's built-in mic or a USB microphone. Audio filters you set up in OBS will not reach the meeting unless you route OBS's audio out through a separate virtual audio device. If you rely on OBS noise suppression for calls, plan for that extra routing step. Otherwise, use the meeting app's own noise suppression.
Segmentation-based blur can use a lot of processing power. If the computer is overloaded, OBS may drop or delay frames. In heavy cases, video can appear to fall out of step with speech. This is a general performance principle, not a measured result for any specific plugin or webcam. If you notice lag, lower the camera resolution or frame rate, pick a lighter model or setting in the filter, or use GPU-based processing where available.
Blur does not hide sound from the room. Echo, keyboard noise or background voices picked up by the webcam microphone stay the same. Mic placement and audio filters are what address those.
Gaps in the available evidence
No confirmed evidence was supplied for exact OBS version numbers, plugin release details, supported GPU models, performance figures or edge-quality comparisons between methods. Check the current OBS release notes and the plugin's own documentation for compatibility with your operating system and hardware before installing.
