How to Use Microsoft Teams Backgrounds on Mac
Step-by-step instructions for changing Microsoft Teams backgrounds on a Mac, including before-call setup, meeting controls, blur effects, and troubleshooting.
Before you start
You can change or blur your background in Microsoft Teams on a Mac from the pre-join screen or during a meeting. The feature works locally in the Teams app. A camera connection is required, and the app needs permission to access the camera.
Check that the correct camera is selected before applying a background. Open the meeting controls, go to the camera settings, and confirm that the selected camera matches the device you want to use. If the camera is built into the Mac, the setting may appear only in System Settings.
Step-by-step instructions
To set a background before joining a meeting, start by opening the meeting link in Teams. On the pre-join screen, find the background settings control, which may appear as a person icon or a background effects button. Select it to open the background options.
Choose a background image from the available options, or select Blur to soften the room behind you. If the button is not visible, join the meeting first and then change the background from the in-call controls.
During a meeting, open the More actions menu in the meeting toolbar and choose Apply background effects. The same set of backgrounds and blur options appears. Select one to apply it immediately. The change affects everyone else's view of your video.
To stop using a background, return to the background effects panel and select None. This makes the camera show the room as it is without any effect.
Check the output
After applying a background, check the preview image in the background effects panel. The effect should follow your outline without covering your face. Move slightly and see whether the background stays in place.
The overall video quality depends on the camera resolution and frame rate. A low-resolution camera may produce a softer result, especially with blur. The effect does not change the file format or compression of the meeting video.
Common problems and next steps
If the background button is unavailable, make sure the Mac has granted camera permission to Microsoft Teams. Open System Settings, select Privacy & Security, then Camera, and enable Teams. You may need to restart the app after changing the permission.
For a cleaner background effect, position yourself in even lighting and avoid moving quickly across the frame. The effect is most reliable when your face and upper body are visible and the space behind you is not too cluttered.
If the selected camera is not the one you expect, close background effects and reopen the camera menu from the meeting controls. Select the correct device and then apply the background again. Different Mac models and Teams versions may place these controls in slightly different locations.
