How to Change Your Messenger Video Call Background
Blur or replace your background in a Messenger video call: what to prepare, how to find background effects, how to check the result and fix common issues.
Messenger can blur or replace the background behind you during a video call on many devices. The feature appears among the in-call effects. Whether you see it, and which options it offers, depends on your device, operating system, app version and account. The steps below describe the general process. Expect labels and icons to differ slightly from what you see on your screen.
Before you start
- Update Messenger to the latest version available for your device. Background effects are added and changed through app updates, so an older build may not show them.
- Make sure Messenger has camera permission. On a phone, check the app's permissions in the system settings. In a browser, check the site permissions for the page you call from.
- Confirm the selected camera is the one you want, especially on a computer with both a built-in webcam and an external one.
- Set up even, front-facing lighting and, if possible, sit in front of a wall or surface that contrasts with your clothing and hair. Background separation relies on telling you apart from the room, and dim or backlit scenes make that harder.
- If you plan to use your own background picture, prepare it in advance. A common image file format such as JPEG or PNG is the safest choice. Pick an aspect ratio close to how you hold the device: landscape for a computer, usually portrait for a phone.
Messenger does not clearly state whether the effect is processed on your device or by a service. It also does not clearly state how an uploaded background image is stored. Treat any picture you upload as a file shared with the app, and check Meta's current privacy information if this matters to you.
Step-by-step instructions
On a phone or tablet:
- 1. Start or join a video call and make sure your camera is on.
- 2. Tap the screen to show the call controls if they are hidden.
- 3. Look for the effects option among the call controls. It is often shown as a face or sparkle icon, but the icon differs between versions.
- 4. Open the background category if effects are grouped. Then choose blur, a preset background picture, or the option to add your own image if your version offers it.
- 5. If you add your own image, select it from your gallery and wait for it to appear behind you in your self-view.
- 6. To undo the change, open the same effects panel and choose the option that removes effects. It is usually labelled none or shown as an empty or crossed-out circle.
On a computer, start the call in the desktop app or browser and open the call options or effects menu, then pick a background in the same way. Background effects are not available in every browser or desktop version. If you cannot find them, try the other desktop route or make the call from your phone.
If your setup has no built-in background option, some people use a separate virtual camera application on a computer instead. This program adds the background and appears as an extra capture source. You then choose that virtual camera as the selected camera in Messenger or in the browser's camera settings. Whether Messenger accepts a virtual camera depends on your setup, so test it before an important call.
Check the output
Watch your self-view after applying the background. Turn your head, raise a hand and lean slightly to the side. This shows whether the edges around your hair, shoulders and fingers stay clean or whether parts of the room show through.
Your self-view may be mirrored, so text in a background picture can look reversed to you. This does not necessarily mean the other person sees it that way. The most reliable check is a short test call with someone you trust, who can tell you what they actually see.
Expect the background to look softer to the other person than the original file. Video calls compress the picture, and the resolution, frame rate and bitrate change with your connection, so fine detail and small text in a custom image may be lost. Effects also add processing work, which can make an older device run warmer or drain its battery faster.
Common problems and next steps
- No background or effects option: update the app, restart it and check again. If it is still missing, your device or version may not support it, and another device or the desktop app may be the alternative.
- Flickering or patchy edges: improve the lighting on your face, move away from a bright window behind you, and increase contrast between you and the wall. A plain background behind you helps the most.
- Custom picture is cropped or stretched: the app fits the image to your video frame. Use an image whose aspect ratio matches your camera orientation, keep the important part near the centre, and choose reasonable pixel dimensions rather than a very small image.
- Image will not upload or looks wrong: convert it to a standard JPEG or PNG. Transparent areas in a PNG may be filled with a solid colour, so use a fully opaque image.
- Camera shows black or the effect will not apply: confirm camera permission, close other apps that may be using the camera, and on a computer check that the correct camera is selected.
- Background resets between calls: some versions do not remember the choice, so reapply it at the start of each call.
Finally, a blurred or replaced background reduces what others see, but it is not a guarantee of privacy. Objects can briefly appear at the edges when you move or when the effect loses track of you. Remove anything sensitive from view before the call rather than relying on the effect alone.
